Saynt Hugh.

¶ The soueraynes must haue due honour / bycause they in the monastery done vse the rome and persone of our sauyour Iesu.* 1.1 So he sayd hymselfe. Who so hereth you and dothe obey you / dothe here & obeyeth me. And who so despyseth & is vnto you disobedyent / dothe despyse and is inobedyent vnto me. The true seruauntes of god wyll therfore honour in theyr pre∣lates / theyr lorde and mayster Iesu. For whose loue they toke them to be theyr maysters and soueraynes / whiche prelates sholde notwithstandynge haue euer vnto our lorde a reuerent drede. And the more they be honoured outwarde / the more sholde they inwarde thynke themselfe vnworthy & moost vyle of all other. so foloweth in the lettre.* 1.2 Timore coram deo / sit sub∣stratus pedibus vestris. That is. But in reuerent dre¦de before our lorde / let them lye prostrate before your fete. That texte let them lye / is not referred vnto the subiectes / that they shold loke for ony honour of theyr soueraynes / but it is spoken vnto ye soueraynes / that they sholde (as is sayd) thynke them selfe moost vn∣worthy / and no thynge to preferre them selfe in theyr owne opynyon before god / for theyr rome & offyce.
