¶ These preceptes & cōmaūdementes that here done folowe / bē called a rule / bycause yt by them a fourme & maner of ryght lyuynge / is vnto vs expressed. A rule hath that name / bycause it may ryghtly rule / ryght∣ly gouerne / or teche a right. And that thynge that we call a rule / the grekes done call a chanon / wherof all suche {per}sones ben / after ye greke name called chanons / that is to say / reguler persones / as gadred togyder in a monastery / lyuynge therin canonycally / & apostoli∣cally after ye reguler preceptes of the holy faders that ordeyned ye same. Vnto the whiche reguler persones is here sayd by saynt Augustyn.* Hec igitur sūt: q̄ vt obseruetis precipimus in monasterio cōstituti. These artycles & poyntes therfore that ensue & done folowe we cōmaunde & charge you / that ben constytute & or∣dred in the monastery / that ye obserue and kepe.
