And doth not the Scripture express these loves of the soul to the Lord Jesus?* 1.1If God be your Father (said Christ to the Jews) then will ye love me:—and, Thy name is as an oyntment poured forth, therefore do the Virgins love thee:—and, We will remem∣ber thy love more then wine;* 1.2the upright love thee:—We love him (saith the Apostle) because he loved us first: I will love thee (saith David) O Lord my strength:—I will cause those that love me (saith Wisdom) to inherit substance:* 1.3—He that hath my Commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me, and he that loveth me, shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him,* 1.4and I will manifest my love unto him:—Look upon me (saith David) and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name.
