Generals.

THe Jews had anci∣ents called Elders, reproved for their tra∣ditions, Mat. 15.3.

Amongst the Jewish synagogues there were some called Elders, who persecuted the Church, Acts 6.12, 13.

The Apostles and El∣ders with the Church at Jerusalem, send hosen men unto Antiochia, with Paul and Barnabas

The Apostles and El∣ders at Jerusalem make decrees for the stablish∣ing of the Church, Act. 16.4, 5.

The Elders were of two sorts; Those ruling well, and those who laboured in the word & doctrine, 1 Tim. 5.17.

The elder men must e sober, sound in the faith, in love and pati∣ence, Tit. 2.2.

Peter calleth himself an Elder, and wisheth them to feed the flock, of God depending upon them, without cove∣ousnesse, as examples to the flock, not Lords over them, 1 Pet. 5.2.

Trials.

A Bishop, to wit a teaching and labouring Elder in the word and doctrine, must be unre∣proveable, the husband of one wife, 1 Tim. 3.2.

All the Elders at Je∣rusalem at Pauls com∣ming salute him, he im∣parts all things unto them, Acts 21.18.

Deacons such as rule well, were to be the husband of one wife, 1 Tim. 3.8.

The company of El∣de••••, 〈◊〉〈◊〉 Ordination, used to lay on hands; so such received gifts, 1 Tim. 4.14.

An Elder was not to be rebuked but exhort∣ed as a Father, the younger sort as brethren 1 Tim. 5.1.

Men were then laid hands on, full of the Holy Ghost, to admini∣ster to the widows and to serve the tables, Act 6.7.

Libertines and Cyre∣nians then at first arose to oppose the Apostles, who were not able to withstand their wisdom Act. 6.9.

Elders at first in every city were ordained with prayer and fasting, Act. 14.23.

The Apostles and El∣ders were had recourse unto by the Church to decide questions, Acts 15.2.

Of the Elders of the Church of Ephesus it is said, that they were made of the holy Ghost overseers of the flock, to feed the Church of God, Acts 20.28.

No accusation must be admitted against an Elder, but under two or three witnesses, 1 Tim 5.19.

By Apostolical di∣rection Titus was left by Paul to appoint El∣ders in every City, Tit. 1.5.

Bishop, viz. one of the former Elders, must be unreproveable, as Gods steward, the hus∣band of one wife, Tit. 1.17.
