PRAYERS ON SACRAMENT-DAYS.

In the Morning, before you go out of your House.

ALmighty God, who through thine only begotten Son Jesus Christ hast overcome death, and opened unto us the gate of ever∣lasting life; We humbly beseech thee, that as by thy special grace preventing us, thou dost put into our minds good desires, so by thy continual help we may bring the same to good effect, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

ALmighty Father, who hast given thine only Son to dye for our sins, and to rise again for our justification; Grant us so to put away the leaven of malice and wickedness, that we may alwaies serve thee in pureness

Page 61

of living and truth, through the merits of the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ALmighty and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope and charity; and that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRevent us, O Lord in all our doings with thy most gracious favour, and further us with thy continual help, that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorify thy holy Name, and finally by thy mer∣cy obtain everlasting life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ALmighty God our heavenly Father, who hast this day called and invited us to thy holy table, where will be administered the most comfortable Sacrament of the body and blood of Christ, to be received in remembrance of his meritorious cross and passion, whereby alone we obtain remission of our sins, and are made partakers of the kingdom of heaven. We give thee most humble and hearty thanks for that thou hast given thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, not only to dye for us, but also to be our spiritual food and sustenance in that holy Sacrament. Which being so divine and

Page 62

and comfortable a thing to them who receive it worthily, and so dangerous to them who presume to receive it unworthily; We most humbly beseech thee to give us thy grace, that we may truly consider the dignity of that holy mystery, and the great peril of the unworthy receiving thereof; as also that we may so search and examin our own consci∣ences, (and that not lightly, and after the manner of dissemblers with thee our God, but so) that we may come holy and clean to such a heavenly feast, in the marriage garment required by thy blessed Son in holy Scripture, and be received as worthy partakers of that holy Table. Grant this, O Lord, for the sake of the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

In the Church, when you are first pre∣paring for the Sacrament.

I Know, O Lord,, that the benefit is great, if with a true penitent heart and lively faith we receive this holy Sacrament, (for then we spiritually eat the flesh of Christ, and drink his blood; then we dwell in Christ, and Christ in us; then we are one with Christ, and Christ with us:) Grant there∣fore,

Page 63

good Lord, that I, and every one of us now approaching thereunto, may repent us truly for our sins past, have a lively and sted∣fast faith in Christ our Saviour; that we may amend our lives, be in perfect charity, with all men, and so become meet partakers of those holy mysteries. Amen.

O Blessed Jesu, who (to the end that we should alwaies remember thy exceed∣ing great love in dying for us, and the innu∣merable benefits which by thy precious blood∣shedding thou hast obtained to us,) didst in∣stitute and ordain such holy mysteries as pledges of thy love, and for a continual re∣membrance of thy death, to our great and endless comfort: To thee, with the Father and the holy Ghost, I will continually give (as I am bound) most hearty thanks, sub∣mitting my self wholly to thy holy will and pleasure, and studying to serve thee in true holiness and righteousness all the daies of my life. And in this resolution, do thou, O bles∣sed Jesu, strengthen me, I beseech thee, for thy Names sake. Amen.

Dureing the Celebration of the Sa∣crament.

[The Elements being consecrated, whilst others are receiving, say as many of the following prayers as you can till you come to receive your self.]

O Merciful God, grant that the old Adam may be so buried, that the new man may be raised up in me. Amen.

Grant that all carnal affections may die in me, and that all things belonging to the Spirit may live and grow in me. Amen.

Grant that I may have power and strength to have victory, and to triumph against the devil, the world, and the flesh. Amen.

Grant that I, and all those who are now dedi∣cating themselves to thee at thy holy Table, may also be endued with heavenly vertues, and everlastingly rewarded, through thy mer∣cy, O blessed Lord God, who dost live and govern all things, world without end. Amen.

O God, the Father of heaven, have mercy upon us, miserable sinners.

O God the Son, redeemer of the world, have mercy upon us, miserable sinners.

Page 65

O God the holy Ghost, proceeding from the Father and the Son, have mercy upon us, miserable sinners.

O holy, blessed, and glorious Trinity, three persons and one God, have mercy upon us, miserable sinners.

Remember not, Lord, our offences, nor the offences of our fore-fathers, neither take thou vengeance of our sins: Spare us good Lord, spare thy people whom thou hast redeemed with thy most precious blood, and be not an∣gry with us for ever.

From all evil and mischief, from sin, from the crafts and assaults of the devil, from thy wrath, and from everlasting damnation, Good Lord deliver us.

From all blindness of heart; from pride, vain-glory, and hypocrisie; from envy, ha∣tred, and malice, and all uncharitableness, Good Lord deliver us.

May it please thee, good Lord, to give us an heart to love and dread thee, and diligently to live after thy commandments.

May it please thee to give to all thy people increase of grace, to hear meekly thy word, and to receive it with pure affection, and to bring forth the fruits of the Spirit.

May it please thee to bring into the way of truth all such as have erred and are de∣ceived.

Page 66

May it please thee to strengthen such as do stand, and to comfort an help the weak heart∣ed, and to raise up them that fall and finally to beat down Satan under our feet.

May it please thee to succour, help, and comfort all that are in danger, necessity, and tribulation; to defend and provide for the fatherless children and widows, and all that are desolate and oppressed.

May it please thee to have mercy upon all men; to forgive all our enemies, persecutors, and slanderers, and to turn their hearts.

May it please thee to give us all true re∣pentance, to forgive us all our sins, negli∣gences, and ignorances, and to endue us with the grace of thy holy spirit, to amend our lives according to thy holy word.

Son of God, I beseech thee to hear me.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world; Grant us thy peace.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world; Have mercy upon us.

O Saviour of the world, who by thy cross and precious blood, hast redeemed us; save us, and help us, we humbly beseech thee, O Lord.

ALmighty God, I beseech thee graciously to behold this thy family, for which our Lord Jesus Christ was contented to be be∣trayed,

Page 67

and given up into the hands of wick∣ed men, and to suffer death upon the Cross, who now liveth and reigneth with thee and the holy Ghost, world without end. Amen.

ALmighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified; Receive my suppli∣cations and prayers which I offer before thee for all estates of men in thy holy Church, that every member of the same in his vocation and Ministry, may truly and godly serve thee, through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

O Merciful God, who hast made all men, and hatest nothing that thou hast made, nor wouldst the death of a sinner, but rather that he should be converted and live; Have mercy upon all Jews, Turks, Infidels, and Hereticks; and take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart, and contempt of thy word; and so fetch them home, Blessed Lord, to thy flock that they may be saved among the remnant of the true Israelites, and be made one fold under one shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

Page 68

ALmighty God, who shewest to them that be in errour the light of thy truth, to the intent that they may return into the way of righteousness; Grant unto all them that are admitted into the fellowship of Christs Reli∣gion, that they may eschew those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same, through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

O Lord, from whom all good things do come; Grant to us thy humble servants, that by thy holy inspiration we may think those things that be good, and by thy merci∣ful guiding may perform the same, through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

O God, who hast taught the hearts of thy faithful people, by sending to them the light of thy holy Spirit; Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort, through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

O God, who declarest thy Almighty power most chiefly in shewing mercy and pity; Mercifully grant unto us such a measure of thy grace, that we running the

Page 69

way of thy commandments, may obtain thy gracious promises, and be made partakers of thy heavenly treasure, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, who knowest us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot alwaies stand upright; Grant to us such strength and protection, as may support us in all dangers, and carry us through all temp∣tations, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, whose blessed Son was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the Devil, and make us the Sons of God, and heirs of eternal life; Grant us, I beseech thee, that having this hope, we may all purifie our selves, even as he is pure; that when he shall appear again with power and great glory, we may be made like unto him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where with thee, O Father, and thee, O holy Ghost, he liveth and reigneth, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

ALmighty God, who hast given thine only Son to be unto us both a sacrifice for sin, and also an ensample of godly life; Give us grace, that we may alwaies most thankfully

Page 70

receive that his most inestimable benefit, and also daily endeavour our selves to follow the blessed steps of his most holy life, through the same Jesus Christ our Lord.

[If you have not said over all these prayers when the Minister is ready to tender unto you the Bread, then after receiving it, go on with the rest till he is coming to give you the Cup. If any yet remain unsaid, you may place them as is hereafter directed. But if they should not hold out till the Cup is at hand, you may supply that interval from some of the Scripture Meditations at the end of This Service.

When the Minister is drawing nigh towards you, say;

OUr Father which art in heaven; Hal∣lowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Page 71

ALmighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of my heart by the inspiration of thy holy Spirit, that I may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnifie thy holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

GRant me, I beseech thee, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that my sin∣ful body may be made clean by his body, and my soul washed through his most preci∣ous blood, and that I may evermore dwell in him, and he in me. Amen.

When he is about to deliver to you the Bread, say;

LEt thy body, I beseech thee, O Lord Jesu Christ, which was given for me, pre∣serve my body and soul unto everlasting life: and grant that I may take and eat this in remembrance that thou hast dyed for me, and feed on thee in my heart by faith with thanksgiving. Amen.

Page 72

When he is about to deliver to you the Cup, say;

LEt thy Blood, I beseech, thee, O Lord Jesu Christ which was shed for me, pre∣serve my body and soul unto everlasting life: And grant that I may drink this in remem∣brance that thy Blood was shed for me, and be thankful. Amen.

After you have received both, say;

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the holy Ghost.

As it was &c.

IT is very meet, right, and my bounden duty, that I should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, Almighty Everlasting God: and par∣ticularly at this time, and in this place, be∣cause thou hast now vouchsafed to feed me at thy holy Table with the Body and Blood of thy only Son, and my only Saviour Jesus Christ, to my very great comfort, to the strengthening and refreshing of my soul. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, with all the company of heaven, and with thy

Page 73

faithful people here on earth, I laud and ma∣gnifie thy glorious Name, evermore praising thee, and saying, Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts; Heaven and earth are full of thy glory: glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Amen.

ALmighty and everliving God, I most heartily thank thee for that thou dost vouchsafe to feed, not me only, but all those likewise who do now duly receive these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Sa∣viour Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favour and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy son, which is the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs through hope of thy everlasting kingdom, by the merits of thy most precious death and passion of thy dear Son. And I most humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Fa∣ther; so to assist me, and every one of us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in, through Jesus Christ our Lord; to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

Page 74

O Almighty God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fel∣lowship, in the mystical Body of thy Son Christ our Lord; Grant us Grace so to fol∣low thy blessed Saints in all vertuous and godly living, that we may come to those un∣speakable joys which thou hast prepared for them that unfeignedly love thee, through Je∣sus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Almighty Lord, and everlasting God, vouchsafe, I beseech thee, to direct, sancti∣fie, and govern both our hearts and bodies in the ways of thy laws, and in the works of thy commandments, that through thy most migh∣ty protection both here and ever, we may be preserved in body and soul, through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

LOrd of all power and might, who art the Author and giver of all good things; Graft in our hearts the love of thy Name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of thy great mercy keep us in the same, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

STrengthen us, I beseech thee, O Lord, with the Holy Ghost the Comforter, and daily increase in us thy manifold gifts of grace; the spirit of wisdom and understand∣ing;

Page 75

the spirit of counsel and ghostly strength; the spirit of knowledg and true godliness; and fill us, O Lord, with the spirit of thy holy fear, now and for ever. Amen.

O Lord bless and keep us: O Lord make thy face to shine upon us: O Lord, lift up the light of thy countenance upon us, and give us peace both now and evermore. Amen.

If any of those fore mentioned Prayers remain unsaid, place them here; but if none, then till the rest have communicated, exercise your thoughts upon such of these Meditations as you have not used before.
