THE CHARACTER Of an old ENGLISH PƲRITAN, OR, NONCONFORMIST,
THE Old English Puritane was such an one, that honoured Goda 1.1 above all, and under God gaveb 1.2 every one his due. Hisc 1.3 first care was to serve God, and therein he did not what was good in hisd 1.4 own, but in Gods sight, making the word of God the rule of his worship. He highly esteemede 1.5 or∣der in the House of God; but would not under colour of that, submit to superstitious rites, which are super∣fluous, &f 1.6 perish in their use. He reverencedg 1.7 Autho∣rity, keeping within its sphere; but durst not under pretence of subjection to the higher powersh 1.8, wor∣ship God after the traditions of men. He made con∣science ofi 1.9 all Gods Ordinances, thoughk 1.10 some he esteemed of more consequence. He was much inl 1.11 prayer; with it hem 1.12 began, and closed the day.
