The Communion-Service.

The Priest standing at the North-side of the Lords Table, shall say,

OVr Father which art in heaven, Hallow∣ed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not in∣to temptation: But deliver us from evil. Amen.

ALmighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magni∣fie thy holy Name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Minister.

GOd spake these words, and said, I am the Lord thy God: Thou shalt have none other gods but me.

People.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister.

Thou shalt not make to thy self any graven I∣mage, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down to them, nor worship them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, and visit the sins of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, and shew mercy unto thousands in them that love me, and keep my commandments.

People.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister.

Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his Name in vain.

People.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister.

Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath∣day. Sir days shalt thou labour and do all that thou hast to do, but the seventh day is the Sab∣bath of the Lord thy God. In it thou shalt do no manner of work, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, thy man-servant, and thy mild-ser∣vant, thy cattel, and the stranger that is within thy gates. For in sir days the Lord made hea∣ven and earth, the sea and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day; wherefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it.

People.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister.

Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

People.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister.

Thou shalt do no murther.

People.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

People.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister.

Thou shalt not steal.

People.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

People.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbours house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbours wife, nor his servant, nor his maid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is his.

People.

Lord have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

Let us pray.

ALmighty God, whose kingdom is everlast∣ing and power infinite; have mercy upon the whole Church, and so rule the heart of thy chosen servant Charles our King and Gover∣nour, that he (knowing whose Minister he is) may above all things seek thy honour and glory: And that we and all his subjects (duly consider∣ing whose authority he hath) may faithfully serve, honour, and humbly obey him, in thee, and for thee, according to thy blessed Word and Or∣dinance, through Iesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the holy Ghost, liveth and reign∣eth ever one God, world without end. Amen.

ALmighty and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost for∣give the sins of all them that are penitet; Cre∣ate and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we worthily lamenting our sins, and ac∣knowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect emission and forgiveness, through Iesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

GRant, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that we, who for our evil deeds do worthily de∣serve to be punished, by the comfort of thy grace may mercifully be relieved, through our Lord and Saviour Iesus Christ. Amen.

For the Epistle, Joel II. 11.

THe day of the Lord is great, and very terri∣ble, and who can abide it? Therefore also now, saith the Lord, Turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weep∣ing, and with mourning. And rent your heart and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him, even a meat-offering, and a drink-offering unto the Lord your God? Blow the trumpet in zion, san∣ctifie a fast, call a solemn assembly. Gather the people: sanctifie the congregation: assemble the elders: gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet. Let

the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep be∣tween the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not thine heritage to reproch; that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say a∣mong the people, Where is their God? Then will the Lord be jealous for his land, and pity his people.

The Gospel. S. Matth. VI. 16.

WHen ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face, that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. Lay not up for your selves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for your selves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth cor∣rupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

I Believe in one God, the Father Almigh∣ty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible:

And in one Lord Iesus Christ, the onely be∣gotten Son of God, begotten of his Father be∣fore all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom

all things were made: who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was cucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, He suffered, and was buried, and the third day he rose again, ac∣cording to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Fa∣ther. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: whose king∣dom shall have no end.

And I believe in the holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of life, who proceedeth from the Fa∣ther and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one Ca∣tholick and Apostolick Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Then followeth the Sermon; and after that shall be said,

Blessed be the man that provideth for the sick and needy: the Lord shall deliver him in the time of trouble.

He that hath pity upon the Poor, Lendeth unto the Lord: and look what he layeth out, it shall be paid him again.

Let us pray for the whole state of Christs Church militant here on earth.

ALmighty and everliving God, who by thy holy Apostle hast taught us to make prayers and supplications, and to give thanks for all men: We humbly beseech thee most mercifully (to accept our alms and oblations, and) to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy divine Majesty, beseeching thee to inspire continually the Vniversal Church with the spirit of truth, unity and concord: and grant that all they that do confess thy holy Name, may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love. We beseech thee also to save and defend all Christian Kings, Princes, and Go∣vernours, and especially thy servant CHARLES our King, that under him we may be godly and quietly governed. And grant unto his whole Council, and to all that are put in Authority under him, that they may truly and indifferently minister justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy true Re∣ligion and vertue. Give grace, O heavenly Fa∣ther, to all Bishops, and Curates, that they may both by their life and doctrine set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duely ad∣minister thy holy Sacraments. And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace, and especially to this Congregation here present, that with week heart and due reverence they may hear and receive thy holy Word, truly serving thee in holi∣ness and righteousness all the days of their life. And we most humbly beseech thee of thy good∣ness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all them

who in this transitory life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. And we also bless thy holy Name, for all thy servants depar∣ted this life in thy faith and fear; beseeching thee to give us grace so to follow their good ex∣amples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Grant this, O Father, for Iesus Christs sake our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

GLorious, and gracious God, whose Iudg∣ments against obstinate Offenders are most severe, and terrible; but thy Mercies infinite to All, that with hearty Repentance, and true Faith turn unto thee: We, sinful people of this Land, do acknowledge before thee, to thy Glory, and our own Shame, and Confusion, that never any Nation under Heaven had more Experience of all the Instances of thy Goodness, and the Methods of our Amendment; nor yet did ever any more shamefully abuse them. When thou gavest us great, and long Prosperities; we fed our selves to the full, waxed fat, and wanton, and kicked against thee. When thou threwest us in∣to horrid Confusions, from which we saw then little Hope of arising; even in the time of that Distress did we trespass yet more against thee. When by Miracles of Mercy thou hadst turned our Captivities; we soon return'd to Folly, to our Vomit, and to our wallowing in our former, or greater Filthiness. Though thy Plagues have been since upon us to high, and dreadful Degrees; we did not then (as we ought) look every Man into the Plague of our own Hearts, nor return to him that smote us. We went through Fire, and Water; but were not by that

Page [unnumbered]

severe Discipline purified from our Dross, or purg'd from our Pollutions. Even while thou wert fighting for us against our Enemies a∣broad; we were by our Sins at home fighting a∣gainst Heaven, & against thee. And now we are no more worthy to be called either thy Sons, or thy Servants; whom neither thy Fear hath driven, nor thy Goodness led to Repentance. It is of thy meer Mercies, O Lord, that we are not consu∣med; thy unwearied unconquerable Patience, that thou hast not long since given us over as in∣corrigible. We adore the unsearchable Depths of thy infinite Goodness, that we are still under thy Discipline: We are ready here before thee meekly to kiss all the smarting Rods, which we may justly fear thou now holdest over us; be∣seeching thee by the Aids, and Influence of thy Grace to make them effectual to our Correction, and not to our Destruction. In Mercy awaken our drowsy Consciences; Soften and subdue our hard hearts into deep Contrition, and Repen∣tance; Pardon the many great Offences of us thy Servants, and the crying sins of the whole Nation; Remove the Evils we now lie under; Avert those Iudgments which we justly fear, be∣cause we most justly deserve; Vnite all our hearts in the Profession of the true Religion, which thine own right hand hath planted and established amongst us, and in a holy Conversa∣tion answerable thereunto. To this end Pour out the richest of thy Blessings spiritual, and temporal, upon our gracious Sovereign; that all his Counsels, Resolutions, and Endeavours may tend to, and end in the Glory of thy great Name, the Advancement of Piety, and Iustice, the Preservation of thy Church, and the Securi∣ty,

Page [unnumbered]

Peace, and Prosperity of all Estates, and Conditions of Men in these, and all other his Dominions: All which we humbly beg in the Name, and through the Mediation of Iesus Christ, thy Son, our Saviour. Amen.

ALmighty God, who hast promised to hear the petitions of them that ask in thy Sons Name, we beseech thee mercifully to incline thine ears to us that have made now our pray∣ers and supplications unto thee, and grant that those things which we have faithfully asked ac∣cording to thy will, may effectually be obtained to the relief of our necessity, and to the setting forth of thy glory, through Iesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then the priest shall let them depart with this Blessing.

THe peace of God which passeth all under∣standing, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Iesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the holy Ghost, be amongst you, and remain with you always. Amen.
