A Polish'd Piece of black Horn being scrap'd with a Piece of Glass, and laid upon a black Beaver Hat, seem'd white enough; but being plac'd upon white Paper, the Colour of that eclipsed the Whiteness of the Horn, and made it appear like dirty Linnen. From which Experiment it appears, that Colours depend neither on substantial Forms, nor the Hyposta∣tical Principles of the Chymists, but on a Re∣flection of the Rays of Light, variously modi∣fy'd by their new superficial Texture.
