XIII. * Masticatoria, Spitting Balls.

Bate.] ℞ Mastich ʒiij. Pyrethrum, Stavesacre, A. ʒij. Angelica-root ʒss. Cubebs. Nut∣megs, A. ʒj. Euphorbium ℈ss. Wax q. s. mix and make a Mass, of which make Masti∣catories, S. A. That is to say, Spitting Balls, or a large sort of Pills, to be often chewed. They cause Spit∣ting, purge the Brain, and help against Thickness of Hearing, Palsies, and Disea∣ses of the Head proceeding from Cold. They cure also the Tooth-ach.

Salmon.] § 1. You are to put one of the Balls into your Mouth, and constantly to chew it for some time, a quarter of an hour, or half an hour, more or less, con∣strantly spitting out, as it at∣tracts the Rheum or Spit∣tle.

§ 2. It is good to be used in case of Defluxions upon any part, especially upon the Eyes, Teeth, Jaws, or Throat: it removes a Catarrh; and by often and long using, eva∣cuates the Morbifick cause of a Rheumatism.

§ 3 It is said to be a singu∣lar thing to give ease in the Tooth-ach, tho' the pain be never so extream.
