spirite of god, Paul doth geue vs a godly testimony. Quicunque spiritu dei ducun∣tur, hii sunt filii dei. As many as are led by the spirite of god, they are the sonnes of god. And so by a conuersion, as many as be the sonnes of god, are led with the sprite of god, But who wil deny Abraham and other fathers of the old testament to be the children of god, as both god him self and Moses do cal them?

Again, the fathers and the prophets could not foreshew al ye misteries of christ and his church, (which the Apostles do testify to be fulfilled) yea euery word, vn∣lesse they had bene adourned with the same spirite, wher with the Apostles after¦ward were fully instructed.

Saint Austen conēsteth to the same saying. Eodem spiritu fidei a prophaetis il∣la futura videbantur,* 1.1 quae a nobis facta creduntur, with the same spirite of the faith were those things sene of the prophets to come to passe, which are beleued of vs to be done.

And a little after he sayth, we beleue to be saued by the grace of our Lorde Ie∣sus euen as they wer, not by the law of Moses, by the which sinne is not healed but acknowledged.

But now the righteousnes of God is made manifestly without the law, and witnessed by the law and the Prophetes: yf it be made manifest now, euen so was it then also, but in a maner secretly, whiche was signified by the vayl ot the tem∣ple. Whiche vayle rente in pieces at the death of Christ, to signifie the reuelation therof, and then also was this grace of the onely mediatour betwixt God and mā,* 1.2 Iesus Christ, in the people of God.

But it lay hidden, as raine is in a fleese of wol, whiche raine God doth so segre∣gate and deuide, not of duty, but voluntary vnto his enheritaunce: But now the fleese being dried, that is, the Iewes beyng reiected, it is sene open and manifeste, as it were in a plaine flower among all the people. These be the wordes of Saint Austen, by the whiche it is euident, that they of the olde Testament, had the same spirite with vs of the new Testament.

Obiectio.

If this should be true, how say you then to Saint Iohn, who writeth: Nondum erat Spiritus sanctus, quia Iesus nondum erat glorificatus, the holy Ghost was not yet, bycause that Iesus was not yet glorified.

Responsio.

Iohn speaketh not in this place of the substaunce of the holy spirite, whiche is of one assent, and being coeternall with the father and the sonne: But he speaketh of the excellent giftes and graces, which were poured and geuen to the faithfull, after the ascention of Christ. As to speake with diuerse tongues, and such like.

Also the spirite with his giftes was not so vulgare, so copiously and abondant∣ly poured vpon the faithfull and beleuing, as it was after Christ was glorified.* 1.3 So that Iohn doth not denie Simpliciter, the grace of the spirite to haue bene ge∣uen before the death of Christ, but that it was not so cleare, so lyghtsome, and so well knowne, as it should be after.
