Timor filialis, is the true feare and worshipping of God: as when we do worship, loue and feare God, for none other cause, then that he is our God and father.
And as the sonne doth reuerence and feare his father, not because he is corrected of him, but because he loueth him, and taketh him for his fa¦ther. And this feare of God commeth and riseth of loue and faith, not of fleshly hate or feare, and it is none other thing then very faith.
* 1.1It is written in the prouerbes: Beatus est qui semper pauidus. Blessed is he that is alway fearful. And this filial feare is the knowledge of God, according to that saying also in ye prouerbes: Initium sapientiae timor do¦mini. But of this feare speaketh the prophet Dauid saying. Beati omnes qui timent dominum, blessed be al they which feare the Lord. Againe, in an other place.* 1.2 Timete dominum omnes sancti eius, quoniam nihil deest timemtbus eum. Feare the Lord all his saintes, for they lacke no∣thing which feare the Lord.
And as the virgin Mary did sing in her song. Et misericordia eius a progenie in progeniem timentibus eum. And his mercy is from one ge∣neration to another, to them which feare him.
