Saint Hierome by this lake, in the whiche was no water, playnely vn∣derstandeth hell, where is no mercy, whiche when it was prepared for vs, we were redemed and deliuered from it by the merite of the bloud of Christ. This place is also expoūded of many, of the receptacle of the soules of the fathers before Christ ascended into heauen, from whēce they were deliuered and caried vp into heauen, by the benefite and merite of Christ. But Saint Hierome affirmeth that the riche glutton was tormented in the same lake. VVherby it appeareth, that their iudgementes and exposi∣tions of Purgatorie are wauering, and not firme.
