¶ The ten commaundementes are gyuen. The al∣tare of erth.

CAPI. XX.

ANd God spake all these wordes & sayd: [ A] I am the Lorde thy God, which haue brought the out of the lande of Egypt,* 1.1 and out of the house of bondage. Thou shalte haue none other Goddes in my syght. Thou shalte make the no grauen ymage, neither any symilitude that is in heuen aboue, either in the erth benethe, or in the water that is benethe the erth. Se that thou neither bowe thy selfe vnto them neither serue them / for I am the Lorde thy God strongeφ 1.2 gelouse, and vysyte the synne of the fathers vpon the chyldren vn∣to the thyrde and fourth generacion of them that hate me, and yet shewe mercy vnto thou∣sandes amonge them that loue me and kepe my commaundementes.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lorde thy God in vayne / for the Lorde wyl not hold [ B] him gyltles that taketh his name in vayne. Remembre the Saboth daye that thou san∣ctifye it. Syxe dayes thou shalt labour, and do al that thou hast to do / but the seuenth day is the Saboth of the Lorde thy God, in it thou shalte do no maner worke: neither thou, nor thy sonne, nor thy doughter, neither thy man seruaunt, nor thy mayde seruaunt, neither thy catell, neither the straūger that is within thy gates.* 1.3 For in syxe dayes the Lorde made both heuen and erth and the see, & all that in them is, and rested the seuenth daye: wherfore the Lorde blessed the Saboth daye, and halowed it.φ 1.4 Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy dayes maye be longe in the lande whiche the Lorde thy God gyueth the.

Thou shalte not kyll.

Thou shalte not breake wedlocke.

Thou shalte not steale.

Thou shalte beare no false wytnes agaynst [ C] thy neyghbour.

Thou shalt not couet thy neighbours house: neither shalte couet thy neighbours wyfe, his man seruaunte, his mayde, his oxe, his asse, or ought that is his.

* 1.5And all the people sawe the thonder and the lyghtenynge, and the noyse of the horne, and how the mountayne smoked. And when the people sawe it, they remoued and stode a farre of, and sayd vnto Moses: talke thou w^t vs, and we wyl heare,* 1.6 but let not God talke [ D] with vs leest we dye. And Moses sayde vnto the people, feare not / for god is come to proue you, and that his feare maye be amonge you that ye synne not.

And the people stode a farre of, and Moses went in to the thicke cloude, where God was. And the Lorde sayd vnto Moses: thus thou shalt saye vnto the chyldren of Israel: Ye haue se••e howe I haue talked with you out of he∣uen: ye shal not make therfore with me God∣des of syluer, nor Goddes of golde: in no wise shal ye do it.* 1.7 An alter of erth thou shalt make me, and theron offre thy burnt offrynges, and thy peace offeringes, and thy shepe, and thyne oxen. And in al places where I shal put the re∣membraunce of my name, thyther wyl I come to the, and* 1.8 blesse the. But if thou wylt make me an alter of stone, se thou make it not of he∣wed stone, for it thou lyft vp thy tole vpon it, thou shalte defyle it. Moreouer thou shalt not go vp with steppes vnto myne alter, that thy foulnesse be not shewed theron.
