dyd obeysaunce and kyssed hym / and they sa∣luted eche other and came in to the tent. And Moses tolde his father in lawe all that the Lorde had done vnto Pharao, and to the E∣gyptians for Israels sake / and all the trauayle that had happened them by the waye, & how the Lorde hadde delyuered them. And Iethro reioysed ouer all the good whiche the Lorde had done to Israel / and that he had delyuered them out of the hande of the Egyptians. And Iethro sayd: blessed be the Lorde, which hath delyuered you out of the hande of the Egyp∣tians, and oute of the hande of Pharao, and hath delyuered his people from the power of the Egyptians. Now I know that the Lorde is greater then all Goddes, bicause they dealt proudly with them. And Iethro Moses father in lawe offred burnt offrynges and sacrifyces to God. And Aaron and all the elders of Isra∣el came to eate breed with Moses father in lawe before God.
And it chaunced on the morowe that Mo∣ses [ C] sate to iudge the people / and the people stode aboute Moses from mornyng tyl euen. When his father in lawe sawe all that he dyd vnto the people, he sayd: What is this that thou doest vnto the people? why syttest thou thy selfe, and lettest all the people stande a∣bout the from mornyng vnto euen? And Mo∣ses sayd vnto his father in lawe, bycause the people came vnto me to seke counsell of God. For when they haue a matter, they come to me, and I must iudge bitwene euery man and his neighbour, and must shewe them the ordi∣naunces of God and his lawes.
And his father in lawe sayde to him: It is not well that thou doest. Thou doest vnwise∣ly, and also this people that is with the, by∣cause the thynge is to greuous for the, and thou art not hable to do it thy selfe alone. But heare my voyce, and I wyll gyue the counsell, and God shall be with the. Be thou vnto the people to Godwarde, and brynge the causes vnto God / and prouyde them ordinaūces and lawes / and shewe them the way wherin they muste walke, and the werkes that they muste do. Moreouer seke out amonge all the people men of actiuite, whiche feare God, and men that are true, & hate couetousnes: and make [ D] them heedes ouer the people, rulers ouer thou∣sandes, ouer hundredes, ouer fyftye, and ouer ten. And let them iudge the people at all sea∣sons: Yf there be any great matter, let them brynge that vnto the, and let them iudge all small causes them selues, and ease thy selfe, and let them beare with the. If thou shalte doo this thynge, then thou shalte be hable to endure that whiche God chargeth the with∣all, and all this people shall goo to theyr pla∣ces quietly.
And Moses herde the voyce of his father in lawe, and dyd all that he had sayde, and chose actyue men out of all Israel, and made them heedes ouer the people, captaynes ouer thou∣sandes, ouer hundredes, ouer fyfty, & ouer ten. And they iudged the people at all seasons, and brought the harde causes vnto Moses, & iud∣ged all small maters them selues. And then Moses let his father in lawe departe, and he went in to his owne lande.
