¶ He laboureth to draw them away frome circum∣cision, sheweth them the bataile betwyxte the sprete and the flesshe, and the frutes of them both.

STande faste therfore in the libertie wher∣with [ A] Chryste hathe made vs free,* 1.1 and wrappe not youre selues agayne in the yoke of bondage. Beholde, I Paule saye vn∣to you, that yf ye be circumcised, Chryste shall profyte you nothynge. I testifye agayne to e∣uerye man whiche is circumcised, that he is bounde to kepe the hole lawe. Ye are gone quyte frome Chryste as many as are iustifyed by the lawe, and are fallen frome grace. For we loke in spirite to be iustified thorow fayth. For in Iesu Chryste, neyther is circumcision any thynge worthe, neyther vncircumcisyon, butφ 1.2 faythe, whiche by loue is myghty in o∣peracion. Ye dyd runne well, who was a lette vnto you, that ye sholde not obey the truthe? Euen that counsell that is not of hym that called you. A lytell leuen dothe leuen the hole lompe of dowe.
✚ I haue truste towarde you in the Lorde, [ B] that ye wyll be none otherwyse mynded.* 1.3 He that troubleth you, shall beare his iudge∣ment, what so euer he be. Brethren, yf I yet preache circumcision: why doo I then yet suf∣fer persecucyon? For then hadde the offence whiche the crosse gyueth, ceased. Wolde God they were seperated frome you, whiche trou∣ble you. Brethren, ye were called in to liber∣tye onely, let not your libertye be an occasion vnto the flesshe, but in charitie serue one an o∣ther.* 1.4 For all the lawe is fulfylled in one [ C] worde, whiche is this: thou shalte loue thyne neyghbour as thy selfe. Yf ye byte and deuour one an other, take hede leest, ye be consumed one of an other. ⊦
✚ I saye, walke in the spiryte, and fulfyll not the lustes of the flesshe.* 1.5 For the flesshe lu∣steth contrarye to the spirite, and the spiryte contrary to the flesshe. These are contrary one to the other, so that ye can not do that which ye wolde. But yf ye be led of the spiryte, then [ D] are ye not vnder the lawe. The dedes of the flesshe are manifest, whiche are these: aduou∣trye, fornicacion, vnclennes, wantonnes, ydo∣latrye, wytchecrafte, hatred, varyaunce, zele, wrathe, stryfe, sedicion, sectes, enuyenge, mur∣ther, dronkennesse, glotony, and suche lyke: of whiche I tell you before, as I haue tolde you in tyme paste, that they whiche commyt suche thynges, shall not inheryte the kyngdome of god. But the frute of the spirite is loue, ioye, peax, longe sufferynge, gentlenes, goodnesse, faythfulnes, mekenes, temperancye. Agaynste suche there is no lawe. They that are Christes haue crucifyed the flesshe with the appetytes and lustes. ⊦
✚ Yf we lyue in the spiryte, let vs walke in the spirite. Let vs not be vaynegloryous, prouokynge one an other, and enuyenge one an other.
