¶ Paule goeth in to Macedonia and in to Grece. At Eroas he rayseth vp a deed body. At Ephesus he calleth the elders of the congregacion togyther, com∣mytteth the kepynge of Goddes flocke vnto them, warneth them of false teachers, maketh his prayer with them, and departeth to shyppe.

CAPI. XX.

AFter the rage was ceased, Paul called [ A] the disciples vnto him, and toke his leaue of them, and departed to go into Macedonia. And when he hadde gone ouer those parties, and gyuen them large exhorta∣tions, he came into Greece, and there abode three monethes. And when the Iewes layde awayte for him as he was aboute to sayle in∣to Syria, he purposed to returne thorow Ma¦cedonia. There accompanied him into Asia, Sopater of Berrhea, and of Thessalonia, A∣ristarcus [ B] and Secundus, and Gayus of Der∣ba, and Timotheus: and out of Asia, Tichi∣cus and Trophimos. These went before, and taryed vs at Troas. And we sayled away frō Philippos after the Ester holydayes, & came vnto them to Troas in fyue dayes, where we abode seuen dayes.

And on the morow after the Saboth day,* 1.1 the disciples came togither for to breake bred, and Paul preached vnto them (redy to depart on the morowe) and continued the preaching vnto mydnight. And there were manye ligh∣tes in the chaumber where they were gathe∣red togither, and there sate in a wyndowe a certayne yonge man named Eutichus,* 1.2 fallen into a depe sleepe. And as Paul declared, he was the moare ouercome with slepe, and fell [ C] downe frome the thyrde lofte, and was taken vp deed.* 1.3 Paul went downe and fel on him and embrased him, and sayde: make nothing a doo, for his lyfe is in hym. When he was come vp agayne, he brake bred, and talked, & comened a longe whyle, euen tyll the mor∣nynge, and so departed. And they brought the younge man a lyue, and were not a lyttel cō∣forted.

And we went afore to shyp, and sayled vn∣to Asson, there to receyue Paule. For so had he appointed, & wolde him selfe go a fore. When he was come vnto vs to Assō, we toke him in, and came to Mytilenes. And we sayled thence and came the next day ouer against Chios. And the next day we arriued at Samos, and tary∣ed at Trogilon. The next day we came to My¦leton: for Paul had determined to leaue E∣phesus as they sayled, because he wolde not spende the tyme in Asia. For he hasted to be

(yf he coulde possible) at Ierusalem at the day of Pentecost. Wherfore frome Myleton he [ D] sente to Ephesus, and called the elders of the congregacion. And when they were come to him, he sayd vnto them: Ye knowe from the fyrste daye that I came in to Asia, after what maner I haue bene with you at all ceasons, seruynge the Lorde with all humblenes of mynde, and with many teares, and temptaci∣ons, whiche happened vnto me by the laym∣ges awayte of the Iewes / and howe I kepte backe nothyng that was profitable, but that I haue shewed you and taughte you openly and at home in your houses, witnesyng bothe to the Iewes, and also to the Grekes, the re∣pentaunce towarde God, and fayth towarde our Lorde Iesus.

And now beholde, I go bounde in the sprete [ E] vnto Ierusalem, and knowe not what shall come on me there, but that the holy ghost wit¦nesseth in euery citye, saying: that bandes and trouble abyde me. But none of those thynges moue me,* 1.4 neither is my lyfe dere vnto my self, that I myght fulfyll my course with ioye, and the ministracion which I haue receyued of the Lorde Iesu, to testifie the gospell of the grace of God.

And nowe beholde, I am sure that hence forth ye all (thorow whom I haue gone prea∣chynge the kyngdome of God) shall se my [ F] face no more.* 1.5 Wherfore I take you to re∣corde this same day, that I am pure from the bloude of all men. For I haue kepte nothing backe, but haue shewed you all the counsell of God. Take hede therfore vnto your selues and to all the flocke. wherof the holy ghoste hathe made you ouerseers, to rule the congre∣gacion of God, whiche he hathe purchased with his bloude.* 1.6 For I am sure of this, that after my departynge, shall greuous wol∣ues entre in amonge you, whiche wyll not spare the flocke. And of youre owne selues shall men aryse,* 1.7 speakynge peruerse thynges to drawe disciples after them. Therfore a∣wake, and remembre that by the space of thre yeres, I ceased not to warne euery one of you bothe nyght and daye with tearrs.

And nowe brethren, I commende you to God, and to the worde of his grace, whiche is hable to buylde further, and to gyue you an inheritaunce, amonge all them whiche are sanctifyed. I haue desyred no mannes syluer, [ G] golde or vesture. Ye knowe well that these handes haue mynistred vnto my necessityes, and to them that were with me. I haue she∣wed you all thynges, how that so labouryng ye oughte to receyue the weyke,* 1.8 and to re∣membre the wordes of the Lorde Iesu, howe he sayde: It is more blessed to gyue, then to receyue.

When he hadde thus spoken, he kneled downe and prayed with them all. And they wepte haboundantly, and fell on Paules necke, and kyssed him, sorowynge moost of all for the wordes whiche he spake, that they sholde se his face no more. And they accompa∣nyed him vnto the shyppe.
