¶ Mary anoynteth Chrystes fete. Iudas murmu∣reth, Christ excuseth her, and rideth in to Ierusalem.
CAPI. XII.
[ A] T✚Hen Iesus, sixe dayes before Easter, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had bene deed,* 1.1 & whom Iesus had raysed from deeth. There they made him a sup¦per, and Martha serued: but Lazarus was one of them that sate at the table with hym. Then toke mary a pounde of oyntment called Nardus, pure and precious, and annoynted Iesus fete, and wypt his fete with her heer, the house was filled with the sauer of ye oynt∣ment.* 1.2 Then sayde one of his disciples, na∣med Iudas Iscariot, Simons sonne, whiche afterwarde betrayed hym: why was not this oyntment solde for thre hundred pence, & gy∣uen to the poore? This sayde he, not that he cared for the pore: but because he was a thefe, and kept the bagge, & bare that whiche was gyuen. Then sayde Iesus: Let her alone, a∣gainst the daye of my buryenge she hath kept this. The poore alwayes ye haue with you, [ B] but me ye haue not alwayes.
Moche people of the Iewes, hadde know∣ledge that he was there. And they came, not for Iesus sake onely, but that they myght se Lazarus also whom he had raysed from deth. The hyghe Prestes therfore helde a councell, that they myghte put Lazarus to deeth also, because for his sake many of the Iewes went and beleued on Iesus. ⊦
* 1.3On the morow, moche people that were come to the feast, when they herde that Iesus shulde come to Ierusalem, toke braunches of palme trees, and went and met him, & cryed Hosanna, blessed is he that in the name of the Lorde, commeth kynge of Israel. And Iesus got a yonge asse and sate theron, accordynge to that which was wrytten: feare not daugh¦ter of Syon,* 1.4 beholde thy kynge commeth sit∣tynge [ C] on asses colte. These vnderstode not his disciples at the first: but when Iesus was glo¦ryfyed, then remembred they that suche thin∣ges were written of him, and that suche thin∣ges they had done vnto him. The people that was with hym when he called Lazarus oute of his graue, and raysed him from death, bare recorde. Therfore met hym the people, because they herde that he had done suche a myracle. The Pharises therfore sayde amonge thē sel∣ues, perceyue ye how we preuayle nothinge? Beholde the worlde goeth awaye after him.
There were certayne Grekes amonge thē, that came to praye at the feast: these came to Philip, whiche was of Bethsaida a cytie in Galile, and desyred him, sayenge: Syr, we wolde fayne se Iesus. Philip came and tolde Andrewe. And agayne Andrewe and Philip, tolde Iesus. And Iesus aunswered them say∣enge: the houre is come, that the sonne of mā must be glorifyed.
[ D] ✚ Verely, verely I saye vnto you, oneles the wheate corne fall into the grounde & dye, it abydeth alone. Yf it dye, it bringeth forthe moche frute. He that loueth his lyfe shall de∣stroye it: and he that hateth his lyfe, in this worlde, shall kepe it vnto lyfe euerlastinge. Yf any man minister vnto me, let him folow me, and where I am, there shall also my minister be. And yf any man minister vnto me, him shal my father honoure. ⊦
Now is my soule troubled, & what shall I [ E] saye? Father delyuer me from this houre: but therfore came I vnto this houre. Father glo∣ryfy thy name. Then came there a voyce from heauen: I haue glorifyed it, and will gloryfy it agayne. Then sayd the people that stode by and herde: it thoundreth. Other sayd, an an∣gell spake to hym. Iesus answered, & sayde: This voyce came not because of me, but for your sakes.
✚ Now is the iudgement of this worlde: now shal the prince of this worlde be cast out. And I, yf I were lyfte vp from the earth, will draw all men vnto me. This sayd Iesus, sig∣nifyenge what deathe he shulde dye. The peo¦ple answered him: We haue herde out of the lawe that Christ abydeth euer,* 1.5 and how sayst thou then, that the sonne of man must be lyft vp? Who is that sonne of man? Then Ie∣sus sayde vnto them: Yet a lytell whyle is the lyght with you. Walke whyle ye haue lyght lest the darckenesse come on you. He that wal¦keth in the darcke, wotteth not whyther he goeth. Whyle ye haue lyghte, beleue on the lyght, yt ye maye be the children of ye light. ⊦
These thinges spake Iesus and departed, [ F] and hyd hym selfe frome them. And thoughe he had done so many miracles before them, yet beleued not they on hym, that the sayenge of Esay the Prophet myght be fulfilled, that he spake.* 1.6 Lorde who beleueth oure sayenge? And to whome is the arme of the Lorde ope∣ned? Therfore could they not beleue, because that Esaye sayth agayne: he hathe blynded their eyes, & hardened their hertes, that they shulde not se with their eyes, and vnderstand with their hertes, and shulde be conuerted, & I shulde heale them. Suche thynges sayd E∣say when he saw his glory, and spake of him. Neuerthelesse also amonge the chefe rulars, many beleued on him. But because of the pha¦rises, they wolde not be aknowen of it, leaste they shuld be thrust out of the Synagoge. For they loued the prayse, that is gyuen of men, more then the prayse that commeth of God.
But Iesus cryed and sayd: he that beleueth [ G] on me, beleueth not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that seyth me, seyth him that sent me. ✚ I am come a lyght into the world that who so euer beleueth on me, shulde not abyde in darckenes. And yf any man heare my wordes, and beleue not, I iudge hym not: for I came not to iudge the worlde: but to saue the worlde. He that refuseth me, and recey∣ueth not my wordes, hathe one that iudgeth hym. The wordes that I haue spoken, they shall iudge him, in the last daye. For I haue not spoken of my selfe: but the father whiche sent me, he gaue me a commaundement what I shulde saye and what I shulde speake. And I knowe that this commaundement is lyfe e∣uerlastinge. What so euer I speake therfore, euen as the father bad me, so I speake. ⊦
