¶ Chryste teacheth by a symilitude that God is det∣ter vnto no man and how he is alway callynge men to his laboure. He teacheth his disciples to be lowly, and gyueth two blynde men theyr syght.
CAPI. XX.
[ A] FOr the kyngdome of heuen is lyke vn∣to an housholder, whiche wente oute early in the mornynge to hyer labourers in to his vyneyarde. And he agreed with the labourers for a peny a daye and sent them in to his vyneyarde. And he went out about the thyrde houre, and sawe other standynge ydell in the market place, and said vnto them, go ye also in to my vyneyarde: and what so euer is ryght, I wyll gyue you. And they went theyr waye. Agayne he went out aboute the syxte and nynth houre / and dyd lykewyse. And he wente out aboute the eleuenth houre, and founde other standynge ydle, and sayde vnto them: Why stande ye here all the dyae ydle? They sayde vnto hym: bycause no man hath hyred vs. He sayde to them: go ye also in to my vyneyarde / and what so euer is ryght, that shall ye receyue.
When euen was come, the Lorde of the vyneyarde sayde vnto his stewarde: call the labourers, and gyue them theyr hyer / be∣gynnynge at the laste, tyll thou come to the fyrst. And they whiche were hyred aboute the eleuenth houre came and receyued euery man [ B] a penye. Then came the fyrst, supposynge that they sholde receyue more / and they lykewyse receyued euery man a penye. And when they had receyued it, they murmured agaynste the goodman of the house, sayinge: These laste haue wroughte but one houre, and thou hast made them equall vnto vs whiche haue borne the burthen and heate of the daye.
He answered to one of them, sayinge: frende I do the no wronge: dyddest thou not agree with me for a penye? Take that is thy dutye and go thy waye, I wyll gyue this laste as moche as the. Is it not lawfull for me to do as me lysteth with myne owne? Is thyne eye euyll bycause I am good?* 1.1 So the last shall be fyrst, and the fyrst last. For many are called and fewe be chosen. ⊦
[ C] ✚ And Iesus ascended to Ierusalem, and toke the .xij. discyples aparte in the waye / and sayd to them.* 1.2 Beholde we go vp to Ierusa∣lem, and the sonne of man shal be deliuered vn∣to the chefe preestes, and vnto the scrybes, and they shall condemne hym to dethe, and shall delyuer hym to the Gentyles to be mocked, and scourged, and to be crucifyed, & the thyrde daye he shall ryse agayne.
✚ Then came to hym the mother of Ze∣bedes chyldren, with her sonnes* 1.3 worshyp∣pynge hym, and desyrynge a certayne thynge of hym. And he sayde vnto her: what wylte thou haue? She sayde vnto hym: Graunte that these my two sonnes maye sytte, one on thy ryght hande, and the other on the lefte hande in thy kyngdome.
Iesus answered and sayde: Ye wote not [ D] what ye aske. Are ye hable to drynke of the cupppe that I shall drynke of, and to be bap∣tysed with the baptysme that I shall be bap∣tysed with. They answered to hym, that we are. And he sayde vnto them: Ye shall drynke of my cuppe, and shall be babtysed with the baptysme that I shall be baptysed with. But to syt on my ryght hande and on my left hande is not myne to gyue, but to them for whome it is prepared of my father. ⊦
* 1.4And when the ten herde this, they disday∣ned at the two brethren: But Iesus called them vnto hym and sayde:* 1.5 Ye knowe that the rulers of the Gentyles haue domynacion ouer them. And they that are greate exercyse power ouer them. It shall not be so amonge you. But who so euer wyll be great amonge you, let him be your ministre / and who so euer wyll be chefe, let hym be your seruaunt / euen as the sonne of man came not to be minystred vnto, but to ministre,* 1.6 and to gyue his lyfe for the redemption of many. ⊦
And as they departed from Hiericho, moche people folowed hym.* 1.7 And beholde, two blynde men syttynge by the waye syde, when they herde Iesus passe by, cryed saying: Thou Lorde the sonne of Dauid haue mercy on vs. And the people rebuked them, bycause they sholde holde theyr peace / but they cryed the more sayinge: haue mercye on vs thou Lorde whiche arte the sonne of Dauid. Then Iesus stode styll and called them, and sayde: What wyll ye I sholde do to you? They sayde to hym: Lorde, that our eyes maye be opened. Iesus had compassion on them, and touched theyr eyes,* 1.8 and forthwith theyr eyes receaued syght. And they folowed hym.
