¶ The tyme of the prophetye of Aggeus. An exhor∣tacion to buylde the temple agayne.

CAPI. I.

[ A] IN the seconde yeare of kynge Darius, in the sixth moneth, the fyrst daye of the moneth,* 1.1 came the word of the Lorde (by the Prophete Ag∣geus) vnto Zorobabel the son of Salathiel the prynce of Iuda, and to Ie∣sus the sonne of Iosedech the hye preest, say∣inge: Thus speaketh the Lord of hostes, and sayth: This people dothe saye: The tyme is not yet come to buylde vp the Lordes house. Then spake the Lorde by the Prophete Ag∣geus, and sayd: Ye your selues can fynd tyme to dwell in syled houses, and shall this house [ B] lye waste?

* 1.2Considre now your owne wayes in youre hertes, sayth the Lord of hostes / ye sow moch but ye bryng lytle in: ye eate, but ye haue not ynough:* 1.3 ye drynke, but ye are not fylled: ye decke your selues, but ye are not warme / and he that earneth any wage, putteth it in a bro¦ken purse.

[ C] Thus sayth the Lorde of Hostes: Consy∣dre youre owne wayes in youre hertes, get you vp to the mountayne, fetche wodde, and buylde vp the house, that it maye be accepta∣ble vnto me, and that I maye shewe myne ho¦nour,* 1.4 sayth the Lorde. Ye loked for moch, and lo, it is come to lytle: and thoughe ye brynge it home, yet do I blowe it awaye. And why so saythe the Lorde of Hoostes? Euen bycause that my house lyeth so waste, and ye ren euery man vnto his owne house. Wherfore the he∣uen is forbydden to gyue you any hewe,* 1.5 and the earthe is forbydden to gyue you encrease. I haue called for a drouthe, bothe vpon the lande,* 1.6 and vpon the mountaynes, vpon corne vpon wyne, and vpon oyle, vpon euery thyng that the grounde bryngeth forthe, vpon men and vpon catell / yea and vpon all handye la∣boure.

[ D] Now when Zorobabel the sonne of Sale¦thiel, and Iesus the sonne of Iosedech the hye preest, with the remnaunt of the people, herde the voyce of the Lorde theyr God, and the wordes of the Prophete Aggeus, (lyke as the Lorde their God had sent him) the peole did feare the Lorde. Then Aggeus the Lordes aū∣gell sayd in the Lordes message vnto the peo¦ple: I am with you sayth the Lorde. So the Lord waked vp the spirite of Zorobabel the prynce of Iuda, and the spirite of Iesus the sonne of Iosedech the hye preest, & the spirite of the remnaunt of all the people, that they came and laboured in the house of the Lorde of hostes their God.
