LEt us follow the Fathers as guides, not as Lords over our under∣standings; as Counsellors, not as Commanders. It is too much to say of any Father, that which Ni∣cephorus sayes of Chrysostome; In il∣lius perinde atque in Dei verbis ac∣quiesco, I am as safe in Chrysostomes words as in the word of God. It is too much to say of St. Peter him∣felf, that which Chrysologus sayes, that hee is Immobile fundamentum sa∣lutis, the immovable foundation of our salvation; & Mediator noster ad Deum, the Mediator of man to God. The holy Patriarchs in the Old Testament were holy men, though they strayed into some sinful actions: The holy Fathers in the primitive Church, were holy men, though they strayed into some erroneous opinions; but neither are the holiest mens actions, alwayes holy, nor the soundest Fathers opinions, alwayes sound.
