PSAL. LXIX. To the chief musician upon Shoshannim, A Psalm of David. (Book 69)

SAve me, O God, because the flouds do so environ me, That ev'n into my very soul come in the waters be. I downward in deep mire do sink,Line 2 where standing there is none: I am into deep waters come, where flouds have o're me gone.
I weary with my crying am,Line 3 my throat is also dry'd; Mine eyes do fail, while for my God I waiting do abide. Those men that do without a causeLine 4 bear hatred unto me Then are the hairs upon my head, in number moe they be:
They that would me destroy, and are mine enemies wrongfully Are mighty: so, what I took not, to render forc'd was I. Lord thou my folly know'st, my sinsLine 5 not covered are from thee. Let none that wait oh thee be sham'd,Line 6 Lord, God of hosts, for mee.
O Lord, the God of Israel, let none, who search do make And seek thee, be at any time confounded for my sake. Line 7

For I have born reproach for thee,Line 7 my face is hid with shame. To brethren strange, to mothers sonsLine 8 an alien I became.
Because the zeal did eat me upLine 9 which to thy House I bare; And the reproaches cast at thee, upon me fallen are. My tears and fasts t'afflict my soulLine 10 were turned to my shame. When sackcloth I did wear, to themLine 11 a proverb I became.
The men, that in the gate do sit,Line 12 against me evill spake; They also, that vile drunkards were, of me their song did make. But in an acceptable timeLine 13 my pray'r, Lord, is to thee: In truth of thy salvation, Lord, and mercy great, hear me.
Deliver me out of the mire,Line 14 from sinking do me keep; Free me from those that do me hate, and from the waters deep. Let not the floud on me prevail,Line 15 whose water overflows; Nor deep me swallow, nor the pit her mouth upon me close.
Hear me, O Lord, because thy loveLine 16 and kindnesse is most good; Turn unto me, according to

thy mercies multitude. Nor from thy servant hide thy face,Line 17 I'm troubled, soon attend. Draw neer my soul, and it redeem,Line 18 me from my foes defend.
To thee is my reproach well known,Line 19 my shame, and my disgrace: Those that mine adversaries be, are all before thy face. Reproach hath broke my heart, I'm fullLine 20 of grief; I look'd for one To pity me, but none I found; comforters found I none.
They also bitter gall did giveLine 21 unto me for my meat: They gave me vineger to drink, when as my thirst was great. Before them let their table proveLine 22 a snare; and do thou make Their welfare and prosperitie a trap, themselves to take.
Let thou their eyes so darkned be,Line 23 that sight may them forsake; And let their loins be made by thee continually to shake. Thy fury pour thou out on them,Line 24 and indignation; And let thy wrathfull anger, Lord, fast hold take them upon.
All waste and desolate let beLine 25 their habitation,

And in their tabernacles all inhabitants be none. Because him they do persecute,Line 26 whom thou didst smite before; They talk unto the grief of those whom thou hast wounded sore.
Adde thou iniquity untoLine 27 their former wickednesse: And do not let them come at all into thy righteousnesse. Out of the book of life let themLine 28 be raz'd, and blotted quite; Among the just and righteous let not their names be writ.
But now, become exceeding poor,Line 29 and sorrowfull am I: By thy salvation, O my God, let me be set on hie. The Name of God, I, with a song,Line 30 most cheerfully will praise; And I, in giving thanks to him, his Name shall highly raise.
This to the Lord a sacrificeLine 31 more gracious shall prove, Then bullock, ox, or any beast that hath both horn and hoof. When this the humble men shall see,Line 32 it joy to them shall give: O all ye, that do seek the Lord, your heart shall ever live.
For, God the poor hears, and will notLine 33

his prisoners contemn. Let heav'n, and earth, and seas him praise,Line 34 and all that move in them. For God will Judah's cities build,Line 35 and He will Sion save; That they may dwell therein, and it in sure possession have.
And they that are his servants seed,Line 36 inherit shall the same; So shall they have their dwelling there, that love his blessed Name.
