PSAL. LI. To the chief musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bath-sheba. (Book 51)

AFter thy loving kindnesse, Lord, have mercy upon me: For thy compassions great, blot out all mine iniquitie. Line 2

Page 101

Me cleanse from sin, and throughly washLine 2 from mine iniquitie. For, my transgressions I confesse,Line 3 my sin I ever see.
'Gainst thee, thee onely, have I sinn'd,Line 4 in thy sight done this ill, That, when thou speaks, thou may be just, and clear in judging still. Behold, I in iniquityLine 5 was form'd the womb within; My mother also me conceiv'd in guiltinesse and sin.
Behold, thou, in the inward parts,Line 6 with truth delighted art; And wisdome thou shalt make me know within the hidden part. Do thou with hyssop sprinkle me,Line 7 I shall be cleansed so; Yea, wash thou me, and then I shall be whiter then the snow.
Of gladnesse, and of joyfulnesse,Line 8 make me to hear the voice; That so, these very bones, which thou hast broken, may rejoyce. All mine iniquities blot out,Line 9 thy face hide from my sin. Create a clean heart: Lord, renewLine 10 a right sp'rit me within.
Cast me not from thy sight, nor takeLine 11 thy holy sp'rit away: Restore me thy salvations joy;Line 12

with thy free sp'rit me stay. Then will I teach thy ways untoLine 13 those that transgressours be; And those that sinners are, shall then be turned unto thee.
O GOD of my salvation God,Line 14 me from blood-guiltinesse Set free: then shall my tongue aloud sing of thy righteousnesse. My closed lips, O Lord, by theeLine 15 let them be opened; Then shall thy praises by my mouth abroad be published.
For thou desir'st not sacrifice,Line 16 else would I give it thee; Nor wilt thou with burnt-offering at all delighted be. A broken spirit is to GodLine 17 a pleasing sacrifice, A broken, and a contrite heart, Lord, thou wilt not despise.
Shew kindnesse and do good, O Lord,Line 18 to Sion thine own hill; The walls of thy Jerusalem build up, of thy good will. Then righteous offrings shall thee please,Line 19 and offrings burnt, which they, With whole burnt-offrings and with calves, shall on thine altar lay.
