Henry IV. being a∣gain Excommunicated in the Council of Mentz, is forced at Ingelheim to Abdicate the Empire, and on his Knees to im∣plore Absolution of Bi∣shop Albanus the Pope's Legat, who denies it him, and refers him to the Pope.

1111 XII. The Pope having refus'd to Crown the Emperor, by reason of the Contests that arose about the Execution of the Treaty concerning the Investitures, is made a Priso∣ner with the Cardinals, and constrain'd to give Satisfac∣tion to the Emperor, by granting him the Investi∣tures.

VI. Henry after having made a Treaty with the Pope, con∣cerning the In∣vestitures, which is sign'd and sworn to, and Hostages given on both sides, enters Rome February 11th and at last obliges the Pope to grant him the Inve∣stitures, and to Crown him Emperor on April 13.

The Empe∣ror returns to Germany, and being arriv'd at Spire in the Month of Au∣gust, causes the Body of Hen∣ry IV. his Fa∣ther, to be there interr'd with a Mag∣nficent Fune∣ral Pomp, ac∣cording to the permission which he had obtain'd of the Pope, upon the Testimony that was pro∣duc'd, that he dy'd in a State of Repentance.

XXXI.

Bruno Bishop of Segni and Abbot of Mount-Cassin is Depriv'd of his Abbey by the Pope, who gives it another, because this Bishop took the li∣berty to speak too freely concerning the Investi∣tures, and against the Pope's Proceedings

Gelasius be∣ing sollicited to confirm the Privilege of Investitures, and refusing to proceed in that Affair, is oblig'd upon the Emperor's approach to provide for his own safe∣ty at Cajeta, where he cau∣ses himself to be Consecrat∣ed.

The Empe∣ror residing at Rome, causes Maurice Bur∣din Archbi∣shop of Braga to be Pro∣claim'd under the Name of Gregory VIII.

1119 I. Gelasius dies at Cluny, Jan. 29. after hav∣ing appointed for his Succes∣sor Guy, Car∣dinal, Archbi∣shop of Vienna, who is chosen at Cluny, Feb. 1. and Con∣secrated Octo∣ber 14th under the Name of CALIXTUS II XIV. I.

William deChampeaux, Bishop of Châlons and Pontius, Abbot of Clu∣ny, are sent by Pope Ca∣lixtus to the Emperor Henry, he Commences the Negotiation about the Investitures.

The Emperor sends 'em back with fair words.

The Pope deputes to him again two Cardi∣nals to put an end to that Negotiation. They agree upon the same things in Writing, with the Emperor, who pro∣mises to give the Pope a Meeting at Mouzon to consummate this Affair.

Calixtus, after the opening of the Council of Rheims, being arriv∣ed at Mouzon, cannot come to any Agreement with the Emperor. He returns to the Council, where he condemns the Investitures, and solemn∣ly Excommunicates the Emperor Henry, the An∣ti-Pope Burdin and their Adherents.

Turstin chosen Arch-bishop of York in 1115. but Radulphus Archbi∣shop of Canterbury ha∣ving refus'd to Ordain him, till he had ac∣knowledg'd the Prima∣cy of the Church of Canterbury, at last re∣ceives Episcopal Ordi∣nation from the Pope's Hands in the Council of Rheims.

A Council at Thoulouse, held Jun. 6. in the Presence of Pope Calixtus, in which the new Hereticks are condemn'd.

Arnold of Brescia excites Commotions in Rome a∣gainst Pope Adrian, who suspends the City from Di∣vine Service, till the Romans should expel that Heretick and his Fol∣lowers: These last are forc'd to escape by flight to Otri∣coli in Tosany, where they are well receiv'd by the People: But some time after, Arnold of Brescia is taken Prisoner and deliver'd up to the Pre∣fect of Rome, who causes him to be burnt, and his Ashes to be cast into the River Tiber, lest the Peo∣ple shou'd shew any honour to his Relicks.

The King of Eng∣land sends to the Pope to desire, that the Arch-bishop of York may be made Legate of the Holy See in England, and that the Customs of this Kingdom may be confirm'd by its Au∣thority, and observ'd by the Bishops of England.

The Pope only grants the Office of Legate to the Archbishop of York with this restriction, that the same Legate shou'd have no Juris∣diction over the Person of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and that the Bishops shou'd continue to obey him as their Primate.
