¶¶ The .xiiii. Chapter.

[ A] * 1.1AT that tyme Herod the tetrarcha hear∣de of the fame of Iesu / and sayde vnto his servaūtes: This is Ihon y^e baptist. He is risen agayne from deeth / & therfore are soche myracles wrought by him. * 1.2For Herod had taken Ihon and bounde him and put him in preson for Herodias sake / his brother Phi∣lips wyfe. For Ihon sayde vnto him: Yt is not lawfull for the to have her. And when he wold have put him to deeth / he feared the peo¦ple / because they counted him as a prophet.

But when Herod{is} birth daye was come / the doughter of Herodias daunsed before them / & pleased Herod. Wherfore he promised w^t an oth / that he wolde geve hir what soever she wolde axe. And she beinge informed of her mo¦ther before / sayde: geve me here Ihon baptist{is} heed in a platter. And y^e kynge sorowed. Never¦thelesse for his othes sake / and for their sakis which sate also at y^e table / he cōmaunded yt to be geven hir: * 1.3and sent & beheeded Ihon in the preson / and his heed was brought in a platter & geven to the damsell / & she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came & toke vp his body / & buryed it: and went and tolde Iesus.

When Iesus hearde that / he departed then¦ce by shippe in to a desert place out of y^e waye. [ B] * 1.4 And when the people had hearde ther of / they folowed him a fote out of their cities. And Ie¦sus went forth & sawe moche people / & his her¦te did melte vpon them / and he healed of them those that were sicke. When even was come / his disciples came to him sayinge. This is a

deserte place / & the daye is spent: let the people departe / y^t they maye go in to y^e tounes / & bye them vytayllis. But Iesus sayde vnto them. They have no neade to go awaye. Geve ye thē to eate. * 1.5Then sayde they vnto him: we ha∣ve here but .v. loves & two fysshes. And he say¦de: bringe thē hyther to me. And he cōmaun∣ded y^e people to syt downe on y^e grasse: & toke y^e .v. loves / & the .ii. fysshes & loked vp to heven & blessed / & brake and gave the loves to his di∣sciples / & the disciples gave them to y^e people. And they dyd all eate / and were suffised. And they gadered vp of y^e gobbet{is} that remayned xii. basket{is} full. And they y^t ate / were in nōbre about .v. M. men / besyde wemen & chyldren.

[ C] * 1.6And strayght waye Iesus made his disci∣ples enter into a shippe / and to goo over befo∣re him / whill he sent y^e people awaye. And as∣sone as he had sent the people awaye / he went vp into a moūtayne alone to praye. And when nyght was come / he was there him silf alone. And the shippe was now in the middes of the see / and was toost with waves / for it was a cō¦trary wynde. * 1.7In the fourthe watche of y^e night Iesus came vnto them walkynge on the see. And when his disciples sawe him walkynge on the see / they were troubled / sayinge: it is so∣me spirite / & cryed out for feare. And streyght waye Iesus spake vnto them sayinge: be of god cheare / it is I / be not a frayed.

* 1.8Peter answered him / & sayde: master / if thou be he / bid me come vnto the on the water. And he sayde / come. And when Peter was co∣me

doune out of y^e shippe / he walked on y^e wa¦ter / to go to Iesus. But when he sawe a mygh¦ty wynde / he was afrayed. And as he beganne to synke / he cryed sayinge: master save me. And immediatly Iesus stretched forth his hō¦de / & caught him / & sayde to him: O thou of ly∣tell faith / wherfore diddest thou dout? And as∣sone as they were come in to y^e shippe / y^e wyn∣de ceassed. Then they that were in the shippe / came and worshipped him / sayinge: of a truth thou arte y^e sonne of God. * 1.9And when they we∣re come over / they went in to y^e londe of Gena¦zareth. And when y^e men of y^t place had know¦ledge of him / they sent out in to all y^t countre rounde about / & brought vnto him all that we¦re sicke / & besought him / that they myght tou∣che the hemme of his vesture only.* 1.10 And as ma¦ny as touched it were made safe.
