[ B] ¶Vortymer was made kīg of bryteyn the yere of cryst .iiii.C.lxiiii he gaue .iiii. battels to Engest & at ye last droue hym owt of the land wherof his doughter Ronwyn was sad & causyd Vortymer to be poysonyd / Then the bryttons by comen assent made Vortyger kyng agayne / Anon after Engest cam agayn in to Englond wyth myche pepull to clayme hys coūtrey kent / where vppon there was a day of trewse takyn ye vortyger & he shuld mete / but Engest made hys folk{is} pryuyly to put knyffys in theyr hose & at a certayn wach word which was nempnith youre sexis euery saxon drew his knife & slew a brytton & there Vortyger was takyn & put in pryson / yet some wryters sey that these bryttōs were sleyn in Engest{is} castell where he desiryd the kyng to dyner and so for sauegarde of his lyfe he gaue .iii. {pro}uincis vnto Engest & to his pepull & Vortyger & hys pepull went to walys / One of these prouyneys was kent where Engest dwelt hym selfe and there was furst kyng / A nother was Essex / And the thyrd was Estangles that ys northfolk & suffolk / Thys Engest toke vppon hym to be kyng of kent ye yere of crist ·iiii.C.lxxvi. & cōmamdyd his own contrey kent to be callyd Engest land where of Englond toke first his name but some sey yt Egbertus was ye fyrst that cōmaūdyd all ye hole land to be callyd englond as shalbe shewyd afterward / but yet long tyme before the cōmyng of Egbert ye peple were callyd Angles as apperyth by holy Bede & other historyers whych were lōg before ye tyme of the seyd Egbert ∴ [ B]
