[ B] this Elfleda withstod thē & droue thē bak & took the queen of welchmē prisoner / & the same yere Elfleda wan the towne of darby from the danys & dyd many other noble dedys sone after that noble Prynces Elfleda dyed / and than the kyng seisyd that contrey of Mercia & ioynyd hit to his own kīg∣dome / This Edward subduid ye kīg of skotlād & cūbers & fortune was euer frēdly to hī ī his warris. ¶Ethelstane the son of Edward began his reyn ouer the most part of Englōd the yere of cryste .ix.Cxxv / he maryed hys syster to Sitherus a dane then kyng of northūberlād / he made Cōstātyne kyng of Skottys subiect vnto hym & after yt restoryd him agayn to his kyngdome / After this Sitherus died & therfore Ethelstane seysid northūber ī to his own hād / wherfore ye sō of Sither{us} maried ye doughter of Cōstātyne kīg of skott{is} whych both cōfetheryd agaynst ye kyng Ethelstane & ēteryd northūberlād by the ryuer of hūber with a gret host of danis skottys & other whō the kīg incoūteryd & there in playn battell Cōstātyne was slayn & .v. small vnder kīgis & .xii dukys with ye more {per}t of the strāgers / This Ethelstane subduid the west brittōs at harford he had mych war styll with the danys. ¶Edmōd broder to Ethelstane begā his reyne ouer Englōd ye yere of cryst / ix.Cxl / In the furst yere of his reyn the danys of northūberlād rebellyd to whose help .ii. princis of danys one callyd Anlaff A nother callyd Reynold cā frō Irelād with a gret host of danys & other strāgers / but kīg Edmōd with Malcolyn kyng of skottis & his people bete them bak & made them to forsake that contrey of northū∣berlād wherfor he gaff Malcolyn the contrey of Cumberland and scysyd yt resedu in to his own hād{is} ¶Edredus the broder of Edmōd was next kyng of Enlgōd the yere of cryst .ixC.xlxii. In his tyme the danys rebellyd a gayn & too the cyte of york but the kyng preparyd toward thē & dystroyed a gret {per}t of y cōtrey & ī cōclusiō he subduid yē / but not without losse of mē / & by appoyntmēt banyshyd theyr duke hircus & ioynyd yt kingedome of Nor∣thumberlande to hys owne domynyons.
