Piety, not promotion, that makes up a Godly Minister. [ 1216]

IT was the speech of Boniface that was a Martyr,* 1.1 one asking him, Whether it were lawul to give Sacramental Wine in a woodden cup: Time was, said he, when there ere woodden Chalices and golden Priests, but now there are gol∣den Chalices and woodden Priests: Thus it was of old, they thought then to gain Mens devotion by outward pomp and bravery, yet when woodden Chalices came in, that things were carried in a lower way, the Ministery lost nothing of its lustre; Whereas many Ministers think, if they should be poor and mean, every one would contemn their Ministery, hence they fondly imagine, that the way to have the Ministery respected, is to get great 〈◊〉〈◊〉 but they are quite out, that will not do it; For it is Piety not promotion that makes up a godly Minister; And a poor godly man that exerciseth his function conscionably, will gain more respect then any other Dignitaries whatsoever.
