IT is said of Archimedes,* 1.1 that famous Mathematician of Syracuse, who having
by his Art framed a curious Instrument, that if he could but have told how to
fix it, it would have raised the very foundations of the whole Earth. Such an
Instrument is Prayer, which if it be set upon God, and fixed in Heaven, it will
fetch Earth up to Heaven, change earthly thoughts into heavenly conceptions, turn
flesh into spirit, metamorphose nature into grace, and earth into heaven.
