I exhort therefore, that first of all, sup∣plications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men: For Kings, and for all that are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
ST. Paul wrote this Epistle to Ti∣mothy, to instruct him in the dis∣charge of his Episcopal Office and Power, to which he had or∣dained him: And the first thing he gives him in charge (where∣by we may guess what weight he laid on it) is this in my Text, I exhort therefore, That first of all, or I first of all exhort, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men. To affix a proper and distinct signification on these words, Supplications, Prayers, Intercessions, and giving of thanks, which are recommended as the distinct parts of Prayer, Learned men tell us,
