CHAP. VIII.

AND it came to pass when Samuel was old a 1.1, that he made his sons Judges b 1.2 over Isra∣el.

Now the name of his first-born was Joel, and the name of his second Abiah: they were judges in Beer-sheba c 1.3.

And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and * 1.4 took bribes d 1.5, and perverted judgment.

Then all the Elders e 1.6 of Israel gathered them∣selves together, and came to Samuel unto Ra∣mah.

And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways f 1.7: now * 1.8 make us a king to judge us g 1.9, like all the nations h 1.10.

¶ But the thing ‡ 1.11 displeased Samuel i 1.12, when they said, Give us a king to judg us: and Samuel prayed unto the LORD k 1.13.

And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people l 1.14 in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee m 1.15, but * 1.16 have rejected me n 1.17, that I should not reign over them o 1.18.

According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods: so do they also unto thee p 1.19.

Now therefore ‖ 1.20 hearken unto their voice: ‖ 1.21 howbeit, yet protest solemnly unto them q 1.22, and shew them the manner of the king r 1.23▪ that shall reign over them.

¶ And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people, that asked of him a king.

And he said, This will be * 1.24 the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he * 1.25 will take your sons s 1.26, and appoint t•…•…m for himself, for his charets, and to be his horsmen t 1.27, and some shall run before his charets.

And he will appoint him u 1.28 captains over thousands, and captains over fifties, and will 〈◊〉〈◊〉 them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest x 1.29, and to make his instruments of war, and instru∣ments of his charets y 1.30.

And he will take your daughters z 1.31 to be con∣fectioners, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

And * 1.32 he will take your fields a 1.33, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants b 1.34.

And he will take the tenth c 1.35 of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his ‡ 1.36 officers d 1.37, and to his servants.

And he will take your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work e 1.38.

He will take the tenth of your sheep, and ye shall be his servants f 1.39.

And ye shall cry out in that day g 1.40, because of the king which ye shall have chosen you: and the LORD will not hear you in that day h 1.41.

¶ Nevertheless, the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel: and they said, Nay i 1.42, but there shall be a king over us k 1.43:

That we also may be like all the nations l 1.44, and that our king may judge us ‡ 1.45 and go out before us ‡ 1.46, and fight our battels.

And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD m 1.47.

And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Sa∣muel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city n 1.48.
