CHAP. XV.

SAmuel also said unto Saul, * 1.1 The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people a 1.2, over Israel: now therefore hearken b 1.3 thou unto the voice of the LORD thy God.

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remem∣ber that which Amalck did to Israel c 1.4, * 1.5 how he laid wait for him in the way when he came up from Egypt d 1.6.

Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly de∣stroy all that they have e 1.7, and spare them not f 1.8; but slay both man and woman, infant and suck∣ling g 1.9, ox and sheep, camel and asse h 1.10.

And Saul called the people together, and numbred them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah k 1.11.

And Saul came to a city of Amalek l 1.12, and ‖ 1.13 laid wait m 1.14 in the valley.

¶ And Saul said unto the Kenites n 1.15, Go, de∣part, get ye down from among the Amalekites, le•…•…t I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kind∣ness p 1.16 〈◊〉〈◊〉 all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from a∣mong the Amalekites.

And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havi∣lah until thou comest to * 1.17 Shur, that is over against Egypt.* 1.18

And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive r 1.19, and * 1.20 utterly destroyed all the people s 1.21 with the edge of the sword.

But Saul and the people t 1.22 spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and ‖ 1.23 of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good u 1.24, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile, and refuse, that they destroyed utterly x 1.25.

¶ Then came the word of the LORD un∣to Samuel, saying,

It * 1.26 repenteth me y 1.27 that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not ‡ 1.28 performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel, and he cried unto the LORD all night z 1.29.

And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel a 1.30, and behold, he set him up a ‡ 1.31 place b 1.32, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.

And Samuel came unto Saul, and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD c 1.33, I have ‡ 1.34 performed the commandment of the LORD d 1.35.

And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear e 1.36?

And Saul said, They f 1.37 have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sh•…•…ep, and of the oxen, to sacrifice un∣to the LORD g 1.38 thy God h 1.39, and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.

And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight i 1.40, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?

And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go, and utterly destroy the sinners k 1.41 the Ama∣lekites, and fight against them, until ‡ 1.42 they be consumed.

Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst flye upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD l 1.43?

And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD m 1.44, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek n 1.45, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

But the people took of the spoil, sheep and

oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed o 1.46, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.

And Samuel said, * 1.47 Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, as in obey∣ing the voice of the LORD? Behold, * 1.48 to obey is better than sacrifice p 1.49: and to hearken q 1.50, than the fat of rams r 1.51.

For rebellion s 1.52 is as the sin of ‡ 1.53 witch∣craft t 1.54, and stubbornness u 1.55 is as * 1.56 iniquity and ido∣latry x 1.57: because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from be∣ing king y 1.58.

¶ And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sin∣ned z 1.59: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words a 1.60; because I feared the people b 1.61, and obeyed their voice.

Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin c 1.62, and turn again with me d 1.63, that I may wor∣ship the LORD e 1.64.

And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not re∣turn with thee f 1.65: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.

And as Samuel turned about to go away, * 1.66 he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.

And Samuel said unto him, * 1.67 The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee g 1.68 this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine h 1.69, that is better than thou.

And also the ‖ 1.70 strength of Israel i 1.71 * 1.72 will not lie k, nor repent l 1.73: for he is not a man that he should repent.

Then he said, I have sinned; yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel m 1.74, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God.

So Samuel turned again after Saul n 1.75, and Saul worshipped the LORD.

¶ Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king ‡ 1.76 of the Amalekites: and Agag came unto him delicately o 1.77. And Agag said p 1.78, Surely the bitterness of death is past q 1.79.

And Samuel said, * 1.80 As thy sword hath made women childless r 1.81, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces s 1.82 before the LORD t 1.83 in Gilgal.

¶ Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house to * 1.84 Gibeah of Saul.

And Samuel came no more to see Saul u 1.85 un∣til the day of his death: nevertheless, Samuel mourned for Saul u 1.86: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel. * 1.87
