CHAP. XVII.

THere was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh, (for he was the * 1.1 first born of Joseph a 1.2) to wit, for ‡ 1.3 Machir b 1.4, the first-born c 1.5 of Manasseh, the fa∣ther of Gilead d 1.6: because he was a man of war e 1.7, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan f 1.8.

There was also a lot g 1.9 for * 1.10 the rest of the chil∣dren of Manasseh h 1.11 by their families: for the chil∣dren of Abiezer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of Afriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida: these were the male∣children i 1.12 of Manasseh the Son of Joseph by their families.

But * 1.13 Zelophehad the son of Hephir, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons but daughters k 1.14: and these are the names of his daughters, Mahlah, and Noah, Hog∣lah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

And they came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren: therefore according to the commandment of the LORD he l 1.15 gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.

And there fell ten portions m 1.16 to Manasseh, beside the land of Gilead, and Bashan, which were on the other side Jordan:

Because the daughters of Manasseh had an in∣heritance among his sons n 1.17: and the rest of Manas∣sehs sons had the land of Gilead.

¶ And the coast of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, that lieth before Shechem, and the border went along on the right hand, unto the inhabitants of En-tappuah.

Now Manasseh had the land of Tappuah: but the city of Tappuah on the border of Manas∣seh belonged to the children of Ephraim.

And the coast descended unto the ‖ 1.18 river Ka∣nah southward of the river: * 1.19 these cities of Ephraim o 1.20 are among the cities of Manasseh p 1.21, the coast of Manasseh also was on the north-side of the river, and the out-goings of it were at the sea.

Southward it was Ephraims, and northward it was Manassehs, and the sea is his border q 1.22, and they met together in Asher r 1.23 on the north s, and in Issachar on the east.

And Manasseh had in Issachar, and in Asher t 1.24, Beth-shean and her towns, and Ibleam and her towns, and the inhabitants of Dor u 1.25 and her towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns, even three countreys x 1.26

Yet * 1.27 the children of Manasseh could not y drive out the inhabitants of those cities, but the Canaanites would dwell z 1.28 in that land.* 1.29

Yet it came to pass when the children of Israel were waxen strong, that they put the Ca∣naanites to tribute: but did not utterly drive them out a 1.30.

And the children of Joseph b 1.31 spake unto Joshua c 1.32, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot, and one portion d 1.33 to inherit, seeing I am a great e 1.34 people, forasmuch as the LORD hath bles∣sed me hitherto?

And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people f 1.35, then get thee up to the wood∣countrey g 1.36, and cut down h 1.37 for thy self there in the land of the Perizzites i 1.38, and of the ‖ 1.39 giants k 1.40, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee l 1.41.

And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us m 1.42: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley n 1.43, have * 1.44 charets of iron o 1.45, both they who are of Beth-shean, and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jez∣zeel p 1.46.

And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim, and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot onely q 1.47.

But the mountain shall be thine: for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the out∣goings of it r 1.48 shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron charets, and though they be strong.
