CHAP. XXXII.

1 AND when the people saw that Moses de∣layed to come down out of the mount a 1.1, the people b 1.2 gathered themselves toge∣ther unto Aaron c 1.3, and said unto him, * 1.4 Up, make us gods d 1.5 which shall go before us e 1.6: for as for this Moses f 1.7, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him g 1.8.

2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden ear-rings h 1.9 which are in the ears of your wives i 1.10, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.

3 And all the people brake off the golden ear∣rings k 1.11 which were in their ears l 1.12, and brought them unto Aaron.

4 * 1.13 And he received them at their hand, and fa∣shioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf m 1.14, and they said, These be thy gods n 1.15, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

7 And the LORD said unto Moses, * 1.22 Go, get thee down: for thy people t 1.23 which thou brought∣est out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves.

8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, * 1.24 These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

9 And the LORD said unto Moses, * 1.25 I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people u 1.26.

10 Now therefore let me alone x 1.27, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and * 1.28 I will make of thee y 1.29 a great nation.

11 * 1.30 And Moses besought † 1.31 the LORD his God z 1.32, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot a 1.33 against thy people b 1.34, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt, with great power and with a mighty hand?

12 * 1.35 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains c 1.36, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.

13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thy own self, and saidst unto them, * 1.37 I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of, will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.

14 And the LORD repented d 1.38 of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.

15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides e 1.39: on the one side, and on the other side were they written.

16 And the * 1.40 tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

17 And when Joshua f 1.41 heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.

18 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery g 1.42, neither is it the voice of them that cry for † 1.43 being overcome h 1.44: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.

19 And it came to pass assoon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the danc∣ing: and Moses anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them i 1.45 beneath the mount.

22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief q 1.53.

23 For they said unto me, Make us gods which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

24 And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off: so they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf r 1.54.

26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp x 1.59 and said, Who is on the LORDS side y 1.60? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi z 1.61 gather∣ed themselves together unto him.

27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his bro∣ther a 1.62, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.

28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses; and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men b 1.63.

31 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.

32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin e 1.69: and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book f 1.70, which thou hast wrttien.

33 And the LORD said unto Moses, * 1.71 Who∣soever hath sinned ‖ 1.72 against me, him will I blot out of my book g 1.73.

34 Therefore now go lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee. * 1.74 Be∣hold mine angel h 1.75 shall go before thee. Never∣theless * 1.76 in the day when I visit, I will visit their sin upon them i 1.77.

  The meaning of this Translation is, That Aaron, to wit, by Artificers did first melt the gold, into one mass, and then by the graving tool form it into the shape of a calf and polish it; or as others render the words, he formed it in a type or mould, made in the shape of a calf, into which he cast the molten gold, and▪ so made it a molten calf. But the words may be translated thus, he put it or them into a purse, for so the Hebrew verb and noun both are used 2 King. 5. 23. and in like manner Gideon disposed the ear-rings given him for like use, Iudg. 8. 24. and afterwards he made of them a molten calf. Now the people de∣sired and Aaron in compliance with them made this in the form of a calf or an ox (for the word signifies both) in imitation of the Egyptians, as Philo the Iew expressely affirms, and the learned generally agree, and it may thus appear, 1. the great idols of the Egyptians, Apis, Serapis and Isis were oxen and cows, as is confessed. 2. the Egyptians besides those creatures which they adored as Gods did also make and keep and worship their ima∣ges, as even the heathen writers, Mela and Strabo, affirm. 3. the Israelites whilest they were in Egypt, were many of them infect∣ed with the Egyptian Idolatry, as it appears from Ios. 24. 14. Ezik. 20. 7, 8. and 23. 3. Act. 7. 39. And it is not unlikely divers of them hanker'd no less after the Idols than after the garlick and onions of Egypt. And, being now, as they thought, forsaken by Moses, they might think of returning to Egypt, as afterwards they did, and therefore chose a God of the Egyptian mode, that they might more willingly receive them again.

  (i. e.) This is thy God, the plural number being put for the singular as it is usual in this case. The meaning is, this is the sign or symbol or image of thy God: for such expressions are very frequent: thus this image of a calf is called a calf frequent∣ly, and the images of the temple of Diana are called shrines or little temples, Act. 19. So they intended to worship the true God by this image, as afterwards Ieroboam did by the same im∣age, as we shall plainly see when we come to that place of Scripture. And it is absolutely incredible that the generality of the Israelites should be so void of all sence and reason as to think that this new-made calf did bring them out of Egypt before its own creation, and that this was the same Jehovah, who had even now spoken to them from heaven with an audible voice, saying, I am the Lord thy God who brought thee out of the land of Egypt.

Or he hereby intimates, that this Tribe was designed by God for his immediate service, and therefore recommends this work to them as an excellent initiation into their office, and as a demonstration that they were in some sort worthy of that great trust.

And it is to be considered, that Moses speaks this, as also many other things, as the Mediatour between God and Israel, and as the type of the true Mediatour, Jesus Christ, who was in effect to suffer this which Moses was content to suffer.
