CHAP. XXII.

1 IF a man shall steal an oxe, or a † 1.1 sheep a 1.2, and kill it, or sell it b 1.3, he shall restore five oxen for an oxe, and * 1.4 four sheep for a sheep c 1.5.

2 If a thief be found breaking up d 1.6, and be smitten that he die, there shall no bloud be shed for him e 1.7.

3 If the Sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him f 1.8: for he should make full re∣stitution: if he have nothing, then he shall be sold g 1.9 for his theft.

4 If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive h 1.10, whether it be oxe, or ass, or sheep, he shall restore double i 1.11.

5 If a man shall cause a field or vineyard k 1.12 to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another mans field: of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard shall he make restitution.

6 If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire l 1.13, shall surely make restitution m 1.14.

7 If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour mo∣ney or stuff n 1.15 to keep, and it be stollen out of the mans house; if the thief be found, let him pay double.

8 If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the Judges to see o 1.16 whether he have put his hand unto his neigh∣bours goods p 1.17.

9 For all manner of trespass q 1.18, whether it be for oxe, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challengeth to be his r 1.19: the cause of both parties shall come unto the Judges, and whom the Judges shall condemn s 1.20, he shall pay double unto his neigh∣bour.

10 If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an oxe, or a sheep, or any beast to keep t 1.21, and it dye, or be hurt, or driven away, no man see∣ing it;

11 Then shall an Oath of the LORD u 1.22 be be∣tween them both x 1.23, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbours goods: and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good.

12 And if it be stollen from him y 1.24, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof.

13 If it be torn in pieces, then let him bring it for witness z 1.25, and he shall not make good that which was torn.

14 And if a man borrow ought a 1.26 of his neigh∣bour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good b 1.27.

15 But if the owner thereof be with it c 1.28, he shall not make it good d 1.29: if it be an hired thing, it came for his hire e 1.30.

16 And * 1.31 if a man entice a maid f 1.32 that is not betrothed g 1.33, and lie with her, he shall surely en∣dow her to be his wife.

17 If her father utterly refuse h 1.34 to give her unto him, he shall † 1.35 pay money according to the dowry of Virgins i 1.36.

18 * 1.37 Thou shalt not suffer a witch k 1.38 to live.

19 Whosoever lieth with a beast, shall surely be put to death.

20 * 1.39 He that sacrificeth l 1.40 unto any God save un∣to the LORD onely he shall be utterly destroyed m 1.41.

21 * 1.42 Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

22 * 1.43 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fa∣therless child.

23 If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry.

24 And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword: and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

25 * 1.44 If thou lend money to any of my people n 1.45 that is poor o 1.46 by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury p 1.47.

26 * 1.48 If thou at all take thy neighbours q 1.49 rai∣ment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the Sun goeth down r 1.50.

27 For that is his covering onely, it is his rai∣ment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he cryeth unto me, that I will hear: for I am gracious.

28 Thou shalt not revile the ‖ 1.51 gods s 1.52, nor curse the ruler of thy people t 1.53.

29 Thou shalt not delay u 1.54 to offer the † 1.55 first of thy ripe fruits x 1.56; and of thy † 1.57 liquors: * 1.58 the first-born of thy sons shalt thou give unto me y 1.59.

30 Likewise z 1.60 shalt thou do with thine oxen, and with thy sheep: seven days it shall be with his dam, on the eighth day a 1.61 thou shalt give it me.

31 And ye shall be holy b 1.62 men unto me: nei∣ther shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of Beasts c 1.63 in the field: ye shall cast it to the dogs.
