CHAP. XLII.

1. THen Job answered the LORD, and said,

2. I know that thou canst do a 1.1 every thing b 1.2, and that ‖ 1.3 no thought can be withholden from thee c 1.4.

3. * 1.5 Who is he d 1.6 that hideth counsel without know∣ledg e 1.7? therefore f 1.8 have I uttered that I understood not, * 1.9 things too wonderful for me, which I knew not g 1.10.

4. Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak h 1.11: I will demand of thee, i 1.12 and declare thou unto me.

5. I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear, but now mine eye seeth thee k 1.13.

6. Wherefore I abhor l 1.14 my self m 1.15, and repent in dust and ashes n 1.16.

7. And it was so that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite o 1.17, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends p 1.18, for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath q 1.19.

8. Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks, and seven rams, and go to my servant Job r 1.20, and offer up s 1.21 for your selves a burnt-offering, and my servant Job shall pray for you, for † 1.22 him will I accept t 1.23: lest I deal with you after your folly u 1.24, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.

9. So Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shu∣hite, and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did ac∣cording as the Lord commanded them x 1.25: the LORD also accepted † 1.26 Job y 1.27.

10. And the LORD turned the Captivity of Job z 1.28 when he prayed for his friends a 1.29: also b 1.30 the LORD † 1.31 gave Job twice as much as he had before.

11. Then c 1.32 came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters d 1.33, and all they that had been his acquain∣tance before, and did eat bread with him e 1.34 in his house: and they bemoaned him f 1.35, and comforted him over all the evil g 1.36 that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an ear-ring of gold h 1.37.

12. So the LORD blessed i 1.38 the latter end of Job more then his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she-asses.

13. He had also seven sons and three daughters.

14. And he called k 1.39 the name of the first, Jemima, and the name of the second, Kezia, and the name of the third, Keren-happuch.

15. And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them l 1.40 inheri∣tance among their brethren.

16. After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons sons, even four genera∣tions.

17. So Job m 1.41 died being old, and full of days n 1.42.

  Not onely by power, but also by (for that he always thought) right; about which he had in some sort doubted and disputed. It is a Maxim in Law, that a Man can onely do that which he hath a right to do.

Which is not to be understood simply and absolutely (as is manifest from God's censure upon Iob for his hard and evil speeches of him) but comparatively; because Iob was not so much to be blamed as they, partly because his opinion concerning the methods of God's Providence, and the indifferency, and promis∣cuousness of its dispensations towards good and bad men was truer than theirs, which was that God did generally reward good men and punish sinners in this Life: partly because their misbelief of God's counsels and dealings with men was attended with horrid uncharitableness and cruelty towards Iob, whom they wounded with bitter and injurious speeches, and condemned as an Hypocrite, not onely without sufficient evidence as not being able to search his Heart, but upon false and frivolous grounds, to wit, his sore afflictions, and against many evidences of Piety which Iob had given: and partly because Iob's heavy pressures might easily cloud and darken his mind and draw forth his impatience and passionate speeches; which although it did not wholly excuse Iob, yet did certainly much extenuate his offences; whereas they were under no such temptations or provocations either from God or from Iob, but voluntarily broke forth into their hard, and severe, and untrue expressions concerning God's counsels and Iob's conditions, there∣by adding affliction to him whom God did so sorely afflict, which was most unfriendly and inhumane.
