CHAP. I.

THere was a Man in the Land of Uz a 1.1, whose Name was * 1.2 Job, and that man was † 1.3 perfect b 1.4 and upright c 1.5, and one that feared God d 1.6, and eschewed E∣vile 1.7.

2. And there were born unto him Seven Sons and Three Daughters.

3. His † 1.8 Substance also was Seven Thousand Sheep, and Three Thousand Camelsf 1.9, and Five Hundred Yoke of Oxen, and Five Hundred She-Assesg 1.10, and a very great ‡ 1.11 Houshold; so that this man was the greatesth 1.12 of all the * 1.13 men in the East i 1.14.

4. And his Sons went and feasted k 1.15 in their houses, every one his day l 1.16, and sent and called for their Three Sisters to eat and to drink with them.

5. And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about m 1.17, that Job sent and * 1.18 sanctified them n 1.19, and rose up early in the morning o 1.20, and offer∣ed Burnt-Offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my Sons have sinned p 1.21, and † 1.22 cursed God q 1.23 in their Heartsr 1.24. Thus did Job ‖ 1.25 continually s 1.26.

6. Now there was a day t 1.27, when † 1.28 the Sons of God u 1.29 came to present themselves before the Lord, x 1.30 and * 1.31 Satan came also ‖ 1.32 among them y 1.33.

7. And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou z 1.34? Then Satan answered the LORD and said, From † 1.35 going to and fro in the Earth a 1.36, and from walking up and down in it.

8. And the LORD said unto Satan, † 1.37 Hast thou considered my Servant Job b 1.38, that there is none like him in the Earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God and escheweth evil?

9. Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought c 1.39?

10. Hast thou not made an Hedge about him d 1.40, and about his House e 1.41, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his Hands, and his † 1.42 Substance is ‖ 1.43 increased in the Land.

11. But put forth thine hand f 1.44 now, and touch g 1.45 all that he hath, * 1.46 and he will curse thee to thy face h 1.47.

12. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy † 1.48 power i 1.49, only upon himself k 1.50 put not forth thine Hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD l 1.51.

13. And there was a day when his Sons and Daugh∣ters were Eating and Drinking Wine in their eldest Brothers House:

14. And there came a Messenger unto Job, and said, The Oxen were plowing, and the Asses feeding beside them m 1.52:

15. And † 1.53 the Sabeans n 1.54 fell upon them, and took them away, yea, they have slain the Servants with the Edge of the Sword, and I only am escaped to tell thee o 1.55.

16. While he was yet speaking p 1.56, there came also another, and said, † 1.57 The Fire of God q 1.58 is falln from Heaven r 1.59, and hath burnt up the Sheep and the Ser∣vants, and consumed them, and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

17. While he was yet speaking, there came also a∣nother, and said, The Caldeans s 1.60 made out three bands t 1.61, and ‖ 1.62 fell upon the Camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the Servants with the Edge of the Sword, and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

18. While he was yet speaking, there came also a∣nother; and said, Thy Sons and thy Daughters were eating and drinking Wine u 1.63 in their eldest Brothers House:

19. And behold, there came a great Wind * 1.64 from the Wilderness x 1.65, and smote the four corners y 1.66 of the House, and it fell upon the young men z 1.67, and they are dead, and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

20. Then Job arose a 1.68, and rent his ‖ 1.69 Mantle b 1.70, and shaved his head c 1.71, and fell down upon the ground d 1.72, and worshipped e.
