CHAP. XXI.

AND it came to pass after these things▪ that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel a 1.1, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.

2 And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy * 1.2 vineyard that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house, and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it: or if it ‡ 1.3 seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.

3 And Naboth said to Ahab, the LORD forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee b 1.4.

4 And Ahab came into his house, heavy and displeased, because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said▪ I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers: and he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face c 1.5, and would eat no bread d 1.6.

5 ¶ But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou ear∣est no bread?

6 And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my vineyard.

7 And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Doest thou now govern the kingdom of Israel e 1.7? arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezree∣lite.

8 So she wrote letters in Ahabs name, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters un∣to the elders, and to the nobles f 1.8 that were in his city g 1.9 dwelling with Naboth.

9 And she wrote in the letters, saying, Pro∣claim a fast h 1.10, and set Naboth ‡ 1.11 on high i 1.12 among the people.

10 And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst ‡ 1.13 * 1.14 blaspheme k 1.15▪ God and the king: and then carry him out l 1.16, and * 1.17 stone him m 1.18 that he may die n 1.19.

11 And the men of his city, even the elders, and the nobles, who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them o 1.20, and as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them.

12 They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people.

13 And there came in two men, children of Be∣lial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did ‡ 1.21 bla∣spheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned * 1.22 him p 1.23 with stones that he died.

14 Then they sent to Jezebel q 1.24, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead.

15 ¶ And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naborth was stoned, and was dead, that Jeze∣bel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vine∣yard of Naboth r 1.25 the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead.

16 And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.

17 ¶ And the word of the LORD came to E∣lijah the Tishbite, saying▪

18 Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Is∣rael, which is in Samaria s 1.26: behold, he is t 1.27 in the vineyard of Naboth, whither he is gone down to possess it.

19 And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession u 1.28? And thou shalt speak unto him, say∣ing, Thus saith the LORD, •…•…n the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine x 1.29.

20 And Ahab said to Elijah y 1.30, Hast thou found me z 1.31, O mine enemy a 1.32? And he answered, I have found thee b 1.33: because thou hast sold thy self c 1.34 to work evil in the sight of the LORD d 1.35.

21 Behold, * 1.36 I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy posterity, and will cut off from Ahab * 1.37 him that pisseth against the wall, and * 1.38 him that is shut up, and left in Israel,* 1.39

22 And will make thine house like the house of * 1.40 Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of * 1.41 Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and made Israel to sin.

23 And * 1.42 of Jezabel also spake the LORD, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the ‖ wall f 1.43 of Jezreel.

24 * 1.44 Him that dieth of Ahab in the city, the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field, shall the fowls of the air eat.

25 ¶ But there was none like unto Ahab g 1.45, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the LORD, whom Jezebel his wife ‖ 1.46 stir∣red up h 1.47.

26 And he did very abominably in following idols, according to all things as did the Amorites i 1.48, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.

27 And it came to pass when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly k 1.49.

28 And the word of the LORD came to Eli∣jah the Tishbite, saying,

29 Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself be∣fore me? because he humbleth himself before me l 1.50, I will not bring the evil m 1.51 in his days: but * 1.52 in his sons days will I bring the evil upon his house.

  Quest. How was this fulfil∣led, when Ahab's blood was not licked in Iezreel, which was in the Tribe of Issachar, but in the Pool of Samaria, chap. 22. 38. which was in the Tribe of Ephraim? Ans. First, This was done, though not in the same individual place, yet in the same general place, i. e. in the Territory of Sa∣maria, within which Iezreel was; and in a place of the same nature, a publick and common place; for such was both the place of Naboth's Execution, and the Pool of Samaria. Secondly, This was particularly accomplished in his Son Io∣ram, as is affirmed, 2 King. 9. 25, 26. whose blood is not im∣properly called Ahab's blood, because Children are said to be born of their Parents blood. See Ioh. 1. 13. Act. 17. 26. Obj. These words, thy blood, even thine, shew that it is meant of Ahab's Person. Ans. True, the threatning was so di∣rected and designed at first; but afterwards, upon his humi∣liation, the punishment was transferred from him to his Son, as is expressed, ver. 29. Obj. This is said to be fulfilled in Ahab's Person, chap. 22. 38. Ans. Either that may be re∣ferred to some other Prediction or Commination not else∣where mentioned: or rather, it intimates, that it was in part, and in some sort fulfilled in him, though not so severely and opprobriously, nor with such Characters of the Curse as it was in his Son; whence he there mentions onely the thing, without any regard unto the place here designed. But it may further be observed, That although upon Ahab's humi∣liation the Curse here threatned might seem to be wholly translated from his Person to his Posterity; yet upon Ahab's return to sin, in the next Chapter, he brings back the Curse upon himself, and so it is no wonder if it be in some sort fulfilled in him also. Thirdly, The Hebrew word, rendred in the place where, may be, and is by some learned men other∣wise rendred, either thus, Instead of this that; that being frequently said to be done in anothers place, which was one∣ly done in his stead: or, like as: or, because that. So it doth not design the place, but the cause and reason of this Judg∣ment. And in this sense the same word is used, Zech. 2. 10.
