CHAP. XX.

AND there happend a 1.1 to be there a man of Belial b 1.2, whose name was Sheba the son of Bichri, a Benjamite c 1.3, and he blew a trumpet, and said, * 1.4 We have no part in David d 1.5, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse d 1.6: every man to his tents e 1.7, O Israel.

So every man of Israel f 1.8 went up from af∣ter David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri: but the men of Judah clave unto their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem.

¶ And David came to his house at Jerusalem, and the king took the ten women his * 1.9 concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ‡ 1.10 ward g 1.11, and sed them, but went not in unto them, so they were ‡ 1.12 shut up unto the day of their death, ‡ 1.13 living in widowhood.

¶ Then said the king to Amasa, ‡ 1.14 Assemble me the men of Judah h 1.15, within three days i 1.16, and be thou here present k 1.17.

So Amasa went to assemble the men of Ju∣dah; but he tarried longer than the set time l 1.18 which he had appointed him.

And David said to Abishai m 1.19, Now shall She∣ba the son of Bichri do us more harm than did Absalom: take thou * 1.20 thy lords servants n 1.21, and pursue after him, lest he get him fenced cities, and ‡ 1.22 escape us.

And there went out after him Joabs men o 1.23▪ and the * 1.24 Cherethites, and the Pelethites p 1.25, 〈◊〉〈◊〉 〈◊〉〈◊〉 the mighty men: and they went out of Jerusalem to pursue after Sheba the son of 〈◊〉〈◊〉.

When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa went before them q 1.26; and Jo∣abs garment that he had put on, was girded unto him r 1.27, and upon it a ‡ 1.28 girdle with a sword fast∣ned upon his loins in the sheath thereof, and as he went forth s 1.29 it fell out t 1.30.

And Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard u 1.31 with the right hand to kiss him.

But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joabs hand x 1.32: so he smote him therewith in the fifth rib y 1.33, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and ‡ 1.34 strook him not again z 1.35, and he died: so Joab a 1.36 and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.

And one of Joabs men b 1.37 stood by him, and said, He that favoureth Joab c 1.38, and he that is for David d 1.39, let him go after Joab.

And Amasa wallowed e 1.40 in blood f 1.41 in the midst of the high-way: and when the man saw that all the people g 1.42 stood still h 1.43, he removed Amasa out of the high-way into the field i 1.44, and cast a cloth upon him, when he saw that every one that came by him, stood still.

When he was removed out of the high∣way, all the people went on after Joab, to pur∣sue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

¶ 14 And he k 1.45 went through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel, and to Beth-maachah l 1.46, and all the Berites m 1.47: and they n 1.48 were gathered toge∣ther, and went also after him o 1.49.

And they p 1.50 came and besieged him in Abel of Bethmaachah, and they cast up a bank against the city q 1.51, and ‖ 1.52 it stood in the trench r 1.53: and all the people that were with Joab, † battered the wall to throw it down:* 1.54

¶ Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, Hear; say, I pray you, unto Joab, Come near hither, that I may speak with thee.

And when he was come near unto her, the woman said, Art thou Joab? And he an∣swered, I am he: Then she said unto him, Hear the words of thine handmaid. And he answered, I do hear.

Then she spake, saying, ‖ 1.55 They were wont to speak in old time, saying, They shall surely ask counsel at Abel: and so they ended the matters.* 1.56

I am one of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel t 1.57: thou seekest to destroy a city, and a mother u 1.58 in Israel: why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of the LORD x 1.59?

And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up, or destroy.

The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim y 1.60 (Sheba the son of Bichri ‡ 1.61 by name) hath lift up his hand z 1.62 against the king, even against David: deliver him onely, and I will de∣part from the city. And the woman said unto Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall a 1.63.

Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom b 1.64, and they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to Joab: and he blew a trumpet, and they c 1.65 † retired from* 1.66 the city, every man to his tent: and Joab retur∣ned to Jerusalem unto the king.

¶ Now * 1.67 Joab was over all the host of Is∣rael d 1.68: and Benajah the son of Jehoiadah was over the Cherethites, and over the Pelethites.

And Sheba was scribe, and Zadok and Abi∣athar were the priests g 1.72:
