CHAP. XX.

AND Abraham journyed from thence a 1.1 to∣wards the south countrey b 1.2, and dwelt between Cadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.

And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, * 1.3 she is my sister c 1.4: and Abimelech King of Gerar sent and took Sarah d 1.5.

But God * 1.6 came to Abimelech in a dream e 1.7 by night and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man * 1.8, for the woman which chou hast ta∣ken f 1.9: for she is † 1.10 a mans wife.

But Abimelech had not come near her g 1.11: and he said, LORD, wilt thou slay also a righte∣ous h 1.12 nation i 1.13?

Said he not unto me, she is my sister? and she, even she her self said, He is my brother; in the ‖ 1.14 integrity of my heart, and innocency of my hands k 1.15 have I done this.

And God said unto him in a dream, Yea I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart l 1.16: for I also withheld thee m 1.17 from sin∣ning n 1.18 * 1.19 against me o 1.20, therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.

Now therefore restore the man his wife: for he is a prophet p 1.21, and he shall pray for thee * 1.22, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou, that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine q 1.23.

Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morn∣ing, and called all his servants r 1.24, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid.

Then Abimelech called Abraham and said unto him, what hast thou done unto us s 1.25? and what have I offended thee, that * 1.26 thou hast brought on me, and on my Kingdom a great sin t 1.27? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.

And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing t 1.28?

And Abraham said, because I thought, sure∣ly the fear of God u 1.29 is not in this place: and they will slay me for my wifes sake.

And yet indeed she is my sister x 1.30: she is the daughter y 1.31 of my father, but not the daughter of my mother z 1.32; and she became my wife a 1.33.

And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander b 1.34 from my fathers house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, * 1.35 say of me, He is my brother.

And Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and men-servants, and women-servants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.

And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is be∣fore thee c 1.36, dwell † 1.37 where it pleaseth thee.

And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have gi∣ven thy brother d 1.38 a thousand pieces of silver e 1.39: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes f 1.40 un∣to all that are with thee g 1.41, and with all other h: thus she was reproved i 1.42.

So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maid-ser∣vants, and they bare children.

For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs k 1.43 of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abrahams wife.
