§. Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea.

Here is called Procurator Judeae by Tacitus, Annal. lib. 15. and hath this brand set upon him by Egisippus, that he was Vir nequam & parvi faciens mendacium, De excid. Jerus. l. 2. c. 5. A wicked man and one that made little conscience of a lie; from which unconscionable disposition, those words of his, What is truth, Joh. 18. 38. seem to proceed, in scorn of truth, and derision of it. He succeeded Gratus, in the government of Judea: managed it with a great deal of troublesomness and vexation to the nation: and at last was put out of his rule by Vitellius, and sent to Rome, to answer for his misdemeanours.
