Rich. Flecknoe's ænigmatical characters being rather a new work, than new impression of the old.

Character 61. Of a Natural Beauty. Made at Cobham, Anno 1655.

WHether a chearful Air does rise,
And elevate her fairer Eyes;
Or else a pensive Heaviness
Her lovely Eye-lids does depress,
Ever the same becoming Grace
Accompanies her Eyes and Face:
Ever you'd think that Habit best,
In which her Count'nance last was drest.
Poor Beauties! whom a Blush or Glance
Can sometimes make look fair by chance;
Or curious Dress, or artful Car,
Can make seem fairer then they are:
Give me the Eyes, give me the Face,
To which no Art can adde a Grace;
Give me the Looks, no Garb nor Dress
Can ever make more fair, or less.
