Belet.
THe first mention of this Name and Family (wherewith I have met) is in 5 Steph. Hervey* 1.1 Belet beinga 1.2 then possess'd of some Lands in Com. Northampt.
The next is, of Robert Belet,* 1.3 who, in 11 H. 2. paidb 1.4 C l. for an Amerciament in Com. Surr. Which Robert, in 2 R. 1. gavec 1.5 a Fine of Lxxx l. to the King, to have Restitution of the Lordship of Cumbe, with the Park (which was of his In∣heritance) whereof he had been dispossess'd by that King. And in 6 R. 1. paidd 1.6 a thousand Marks for his further Favour, and for the Ward∣ship of Roger de Newburgh. Moreover, in 8 R. 1. upone 1.7 Collection of the third Scutage of Nor∣mandy, he paidf 1.8 xv l. for the moytie of the Ho∣nour of Purstoke: and in 1 Ioh. was Sheriffg 1.9 of the Counties of Somerset, and Dorset, for half that year. So likewiseh 1.10 in 2 Ioh. for the whole year.
To this Robert succeeded Michaell, who left Is∣sue one sole Daughteri 1.11 and Heir; for the Ward∣ship of whom, Wimund de Raleg gavek 1.12 C Marks, in 3 H. 3.
Contemporary with this Robert, was Hervey* 1.13 Be∣let, who had Issuel 1.14 two Sons, Iohn, and Mic••aell. Which Iohn, in 8 R. 1. upon Collectionm 1.15 of the Scutage of Normandy, paidn 1.16 iv l. And having marriedo 1.17 Alice the Daughter of Fulk D'oiri, died p 1.18 without Issue.
I come now to Michaell,* 1.19 the second Son, She∣riff q 1.20 of Worcestersh. from 22 until 29 H. 2. inclu∣sive; of Gloucestershire, forr 1.21 30 H. 2. and for War••. and Leicestershires,s 1.22 from 31 H. 2. until 1 R. 1. inclusive: As also in 24 H. 2. onet 1.23 of the Justices Itinerant in Yorkeshire.
This Michael, being Lord of Wrokeston, in Com. Oxon. and having the Office of Butler to the King, left Issue, by Emme his Wife, Daughter and Coheir of Iohn de Keynes, two Sons, Hervey and Michaell. Which Hervey* 1.24 obtain'd from King Iohn the Grantu 1.25 of a Fair yearly, at East-Rudham, up∣on the Eve and Day of St. Matthew: And gave x 1.26 the Mannor of Rudham to the Canons of Cokes∣ford, in Com. Norff. for the health of his Soul, and his Father's Soul; and for the Soul of Emme de Keynes, his Mother, his Brothers, Sisters, and all his Ancestors Souls. But this Hervey diedy 1.27 with∣out Issue. Whereupon Michaell* 1.28 his Brother, com∣monly calledz 1.29 Magister Michaell Belet (by reason of his Profession in the Civil or Canon-Law) be∣came his Heir; and, in 8 Ioh. gave C l. Finea 1.30 to the King, that he might enjoy the Office of Butler as his Right; and thereupon had a grantb 1.31 of it, as also a Confirmationc 1.32 of all the Lands which did belong to Hervey Belet, his Grandfather. And for d 1.33 the Health of the Souls of King Richard and First, and King Iohn; as also for the health of his own Soul, and the Souls of Michaell his Father, Emme his Mother, Iohn, William, Bogo, Robert, Adam, Hervey, and Eustace, his Brothers; and of Emme, Annora, and Rose, his Sisters; foundede 1.34 a Priory at Wrokeston, in Com. Oxon. for Canons Regular of St. Augstine.
Howbeit, in 15 Ioh. he incurredf 1.35 the King's dis∣pleasure, for which his Lands wereg 1.36 seised: but had Restitutionh 1.37 of them again, for a Fine of Five hundred Marks.
Yet was he not totally reconcil'd, as it seems: for it appearsi 1.38 That, in 1 H. 3. he had Letters of Safe-conduct to Treat with William Mareschall, then Governour of the young King, and of the Realm.
After which, viz. in 20 H. 3. at the Solemn Nuptials of King Henry, he executedk 1.39 his Office of Butler: But farther I cannot say of him.
