THat this Family is a branch of that, which hath long florisht in the Coun∣ties of incoln and York (whereof I have, in the first Volume of this Work, already discourst) there is no doubt at all to be made, though I never could yet find when it first came thence: Nor seen any thing memorable there∣of till 8 H. 5. that Robert Darcie* 1.1 was Eschaetor a 1.2 for the County of Essex. Who, having been first a Clerkb 1.3 to a Lawyer, afterwards mar∣ried c 1.4 a rich Mrchants Widow of Madon, that had a par in three or four ships at Sea, and purchasedd 1.5 Lands in those parts▪ Which wid∣dow, called Alie, being daughtere 1.6 and coheir to ... F••••z-Langly, diedf 1.7 in 26 H. 6. and was buridg 1.8 in the Chapel of the Hly Trinity, within the Church of All Hallows in Maldon, with this Robert,* 1.9 her Husband; who left issue h 1.10 two sons; viz. Sir Robert Darcie of Danbe∣rie, Knight, and Iohn Darcie of Tolshunt.

Which Sir Robert, departingi 1.11 this life, in 9 E. 4. left issuek 1.12 Thomas* 1.13 (Squyer for the Bo∣dy to King Henry 6th, and King Edward 4th) who diedl 1.14 in 1▪ H. 7. And he Roger,m 1.15 Squyer of the Body to K. Henry the 7th, who, by Elizabeth his wife▪ daughtern 1.16 of Sir Henry VVentworth Kt, had issue another Thomas* 1.17o 1.18; who, in 36 H. 8. being then a Knight, was constitutedp 1.19 Master of the King's Artillery (now called Master of the Ordinance) within the Tower of London: as also Gentlemanq 1.20 of the Privy-Chamber, in 37 H. 8. And, in 5 E. 6. being thenr 1.21 Vice∣chamberlain of the King's Houshold, Captain of the Guard, and one of the four principal Knights of his Privy-Chamber, upon the fifth of April, was advanceds 1.22 to the dignity of a Baron of this Realm, by the name of Lord Darcie of Chiche▪ whereupon he had summons to the Parliament then sitting, and took his placet 1.23 upon the 23d of Ianuary accordingly. But, in An. 1558. (5 & 4 Ph. & M.) being then Knightu 1.24 of the most Noble Order of the Garter▪ and residing at Wivenho in Com. Essex, he declared his Te∣stament x 1.25; whereby, as to his Interrment and Funeral, he committed it wholly to the Order of Holy Church; and dying within less than two years after 〈◊〉〈◊〉 for the Probate thereof bears date 14 Martii ••••60.) was buriedy 1.26 at St. Osythes▪ leaving issue, by Elizabeth his wife,z 1.27 daughter to Iohn Earl of Oxford, Iohn his son and heir: as also two other sons; Alberic, who dieda 1.28 at Newaven▪ and Robert: And two daughters; 〈◊〉〈◊〉 marriedb 1.29 to Richard Suthwell of Wood-Rysing, in Com. Norff. Esq and Con∣stance toc 1.30 Edmund Pyrton of Bentley, in Com. Essex.

Which Iohn,* 1.31 being summon'd to Parliament in 1 Eliz. took his placed 1.32 there 25 Ian. the same year: and, in 16 Eliz. accompaniede 1.33 VVal∣ter Earl of Essex into Ireland. This Iohn, having marriedf 1.34 Frances, daughter of Richard Lord Rich (Lord Chancellor of England) de∣parted g 1.35 this life in 23 Eliz. leaving issue Tho∣mas his son and heir; and Iohn a younger son, who diedh 1.36 unmarried: as also Mary a daughter, wifei 1.37 of Robert Lord Lumley.

Which last mention'd Thomas,* 1.38 upon the fifth of Iuly, An. 1621. (19 Iac.) was createdk 1.39 Vi∣count Colchester for life, with remainder to Sir Thomas Savage of Rock-Savage▪ in Com. Cestr. Knight and Baronet, and to the heir male of his body, by Elizabeth his wife, eldest daugh∣ter to him the said Thomas.

Moreover, upon the fourth of Nov. 2 Car. 1. he was advanc'dl 1.40 to the dignity of an Earl, by the title of Earl Rivers; with remainder to the said Sir Thomas Savage, for lack of issue male of his own body. And, having weddedm 1.41 Mary, the daughter and heir of Sir Thomas Kitson Kt. had issuen 1.42 by her, one only son, called Thomas; and four daughters. Which Thomas marriedo 1.43 the daughter and heir to Sir Iohn Fitz of South∣avistoke, in Com. Devon. Knight, widow of Sir Alan Perci, Knight, and diedp 1.44 in his life∣time without issue. His four daughters were these,q 1.45 Elizabeth, married to the before-specified Sir Thomas Savage; Mary to Roger Manwood Esquire (son to Sir Peter Manwood Knight of the

Bath) Penelope, first to Sir George Trenchard, son and heir to Sir George Trenchard, of UUolve∣ton, in Com. Dors. Knight, after to Sir Iohn Gage of Fixley, in Com. Suss. Baronet, and Susan, who died unmarried.

This Earl Rivers died at London; 21 Feb. An. 1639. (15 Car. 1.) and was buried in the Church of St. Osythes, at Chich, before-men∣tioned.
