OF this Family, which without doubt, assumed their Sirname from the Lord∣ship of Stapleton, lying upon the Ri∣ver of Tese, in the Bishoprick of Durham) was Nicholas de Stapleton,* in 17 Ioh. constitu∣ted a Governor of Middleham-Castle, in Com. Ebor. From whom descended Miles de Stapleton. Which Miles,* in 23 E. 1. wasb in that Expe∣dition then made into Gascoigne: and inc 26 E. 1. in the Wars of Scotland. So likewise ind 28 E. 1. ande 32 E. 1. As also inf 34. and 35 E. 1. being theng in the Retinue of Ed∣ward Prince of Wales.

In 4 E. 2. he received commandh to be at Rokesburgh, in Scotland, well fitted with Horse and Arms, upon the Feast day of St. Peter ad vincula: and in 7 E. 2. was againi in those Scotish Wars.

This Miles took to WifekSibill, one of the Daughters and Co-heirs of Iohn de Bella aqua, (or Beleu) and having been summonedl to Par∣liament, amongst the Barons of this Realm, in 6 and 7 E. 2. departedm this life, in 8 E. 2. leaving Nicholas, his Son and Heir, who doing his fealty, had Liveryn of his Lands; except∣ing those, which were of the Dowrie of Ioane, the Wife of him the said Miles, then surviveing.

Which Nicholas,* takingo part with Thomas Earl of Lancaster, in 15 E. 2. in that unhappy In∣surrection, so fatal to himself, and many other eminent Persons his Adherents, was finedp at two thousand Marks to the King, for the sa∣ving his life; which Fine was remitted* in the Parliament of 1 Edward 3. and have∣ing been summonedq to Parliament, in 16 E. 3. and no more, diedr in 17 E. 3. leaving Miles,* his Sons and Heir, of full age; who be∣came a person of great note in his time.

For in 16 E. 3. he wast in that Expedition then made into Britanny. And in 20 E. 3. attending the King into France, wasu at the Siege of Calais. In 23 E. 3. he was againx in those Wars of France. So likewise iny 29 E. 3. residing then at Bedale, in Com. Ebor. And, in 30 E. 3. whenzPhilip, Brother to the King of Navarre, came into England, to obtain help, for the recovery of his Lands in Normandy; being an expert Souldier, he was senta with him. Whereupon, they passedb through that Country, with two thousand Men; took and burnt several Towns and strong-holds, till they came with∣in nine Leagues of Paris: andc returned not, till they had compelled the French unto a Truce for one whole year. And, havingd served in those Wars with great Fidelity and Courage; in 34 E. 3. obtained a Grante for an Annuitie of one hundred pounds, to be paid out of the Kings Exchequer, at Michaelmass and Easter, by even portions: as also Licensef to found a perpetual Chantrey, consisting of one Warden, and two Priests, in Honor of the Holy Trinity, in the Parochial Church of Ingham, to cele∣brate Divine Service there, for the good estate of himself, and Ioane his Wife, Daughter and Heir to Oliver, de Ingham, and Widdow of Roger le Straunge, during this life: and afterwards for the health of their Souls, and the Souls of all the faithful deceased. Unto which Chantry he gave h the Advouson of the Church of Ingham, and the fifth part of the Manno of Stalhamhale.

After which, (the next ensuing year) he was i again in those Wars of France So likewise ink 38 E. 3. and having beenl one of the Knights Companions of the most Noble Order of the Garter, elected at the foundation thereof; (but never summoned to Parliament) departed m this life, in 47 E. 3. and was buried in the Church of Ingham: whereupon Thomas his Son and Heir, doing his Homage, had Livery n of his Lands. Which Thomas* diedo the same year, without Issue▪ leavingpElizabeth his Si∣ster, his next Heir; then Marriedq to Thomas Metham. Which Thomas having at that time Is∣sue r by her, and doing his Homage, obtained Livery s of the Lands of her Inheritance.
