Howe Andriscus of lowe birth borne hauynge no tytle of macedoyne kynge▪ was take and dyed in prison
BVt of one thinge fortune is to blame
That she is so chaungeable of corage
To set a boye vnknowe of byrth and fame
By fals errour vpon a royall stage
For one Andriscus by surquedous outrage
Without title by subtyll compassinge
Of macedoyne toke on him to be kynge
Coloure was none his clayme to make stable
Except that he of chere and of visage
Was to kinge philip of fetures moost semblable
Wherby the peple in their furious rage
Caught opynyon of wylfull fals dotage
Ageyne reson bochas doth descryue
That kinge philip was resyn fro deth to lyue
Whilom fadre of persa as I tolde
And for andriscus brought vp in wretchydnesse
In presence both of yonge and olde
Was bolde to cleyme by title of rightwisnesse
Shewynge no grounde but personell lyknesse
Mockynge the peple which by their fauoure
Of royall dignite receyueth the honoure
Thus he that was fostred as a wretch
In myserye and eke in pouerte
Fro pore bed his hornys dyd vp stretch
To holde a sceptre of kingly dignite
And by the support of the comonte
And gan wexe pompous and clate
Brought vp of nought whan he stode in estate
No thinge more cruel nor nothinge more vengeable
Nor more hasty to do execucion
Nor more deynous nor more vntretable
Than whan a begger hath domynacion
A curre more frowarde than a stronge lyon
And semblably none so great cruelte
As whan a wretch is set in dignite
This andriscus in his royall chaier
To execute his hatefull cruelte
Gadred peple in cuntrees ferre and nere
In macedoyne and of olde enmyte
Began maligne geyne rome the ci••e
But to withset his frowarde fals entent
One Inuencius a pretor was doun sent
But by cause that he was necligent
And of despight toke of him none hede
He was outrayed and by andriscus shent
With all the peple that he dyd lede
But the romayns of hope better to spede
Haue sent Metellus a full manly knight
To macedoyne to mete anone right
This worthy man lyst nat longe to tarye
Set proudly on in hope it shulde auayle
Made macedoyne to rome tributarye
Toke and riscus manly in batayle
Brought him to rome with mighty appareyle
And made him lye fettred in prison
For his outragious fals presumpcion
Thus for his frowarde vsurpacion
That was haute in his prosperite
Knewe nat him silf by fals abusion
Blent with a myst of blynde felicite
Lyst nat remembre of his first pouerte
Whom to chastise fortune brought him lowe
Bycause he listnat him silf for to knowe
