The text.

For ∴ the sorow that is according to God, worketh penance vnto saluation that is stable: but the sorow of the world work∣eth death.

The note.

Contrition, or sorowfull lamenting of our offences, is the cause of sal∣uation. Not onely faith then saueth as the heretikes affirme.

The answer.

You deceiue your selues, and others whiles of euerie conse∣quence you make a cause. It is verie true that faith and repen∣tance must be ioined companions in them that shall be saued, and yet neither of both properly the cause of saluation.
