❧The .x. Chapter.

¶5 Christe sendeth out his twelue Apostles, to preache in Iurie. 7 He geueth them charge, teacheth them, and comforteth them agaynst persecution and trouble.

[unspec A] 1 ANd when he had cal∣led his * 1.1twelue disci∣ples [vnto hym] he gaue them power agaynst vncleane spirites, to cast them out, and to heale all maner of sick∣nesse, and all maner of disease.

2 The names of the twelue Apostles are these. The first, Simon, whiche is called Peter, and Andrewe his brother, Iames, the [sonne] of Zebedee, & Iohn his brother,

3 Philip, & Bartholomewe, Thomas and Matthewe, which [had ben] a Publi∣cane, Iames, y^e [sonne] of Alphee, & Leb∣beus, whose surname was Taddeus,

4 Simon [the] Cananite, & Iudas Is∣cariot, which also betrayed hym.

5 * 1.2Iesus sent foorth these twelue, whō he cōmaunded, saying. Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into the citie of the Samaritanes enter ye not.

6 But go rather to the lost sheepe of the house of Israel.

7 As ye go, preache, saying: The kyng∣dome of heauen is at hande.

8 Heale the sicke, cleanse y^e lepers, rayse [unspec B] the dead, cast out deuyls. * 1.3Freely ye haue receaued, freely geue.

9 * 1.4Possesse not golde, nor syluer, nor brasse in your purses,

10 Nor yet scrippe, towardes your iour∣ney, neither two coates, neither shoes, nor yet a staffe. * 1.5 For the workman is worthy of his meate.

11 But to whatsoeuer citie or towne ye shall come, inquire who is worthy in it, and (a) 1.6 there abyde, tyll ye go thence.

12 * 1.7And when ye come into an house, sa∣lute the same.

13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come vpon it: but if it be not wor∣thy, let your peace returne to you again.

14 And whosoeuer shal not receaue you, nor wyll heare your preachyng: when ye depart out of that house, or that citie, * 1.8shake of the dust of your feete.

15 Veryly I say vnto you, it shalbe ea∣sier for the lande of the Sodomites and Gomorreans, in the day of iudgement, then for that citie.

16 * 1.9Beholde, I sende you foorth, as sheepe in the middest of woolfes. Be ye therfore wyse as serpentes, and harme∣lesse as doues.

17 * 1.10But beware of men. For they shall delyuer you vp to the councels, and shal scourge you in their synagogues.

18 And ye shalbe brought to the head rulers, and kynges, for my sake, in wit∣nesse to them, and to the Gentiles.

[unspec C] 19 But * 1.11whē they delyuer you vp, take ye no thought how or what ye shal speake. * 1.12For it shalbe geuen you, euen in that same houre, what ye shall speake.

20 For it is not ye that speake, but y^e spirite of your father, which speaketh in you.

21 * 1.13The brother shall delyuer vp the brother to death, and the father the sonne, & the chyldren shall ryse agaynst their fathers, and mothers, and shall but them to death.

22 And ye shalbe hated of all men, for my names sake: * 1.14but he that endureth to the ende, shalbe saued.

23 But, * 1.15 when they persecute you in this citie, flee ye into another. For verily I say vnto you, ye shall not ende all the cities of Israel, tyll the sonne of man be come.

24 * 1.16The disciple is not aboue the maister, nor the seruaunt aboue his lorde.

25 It is enough for the disciple, that he be as his maister is: and that the ser∣uaunt, be as his lorde is. If they haue called the lorde of the house Beelzebub: howe much more shall they call them of his householde so?

26 Feare them not therfore. * 1.17 For there is nothing close, that shal not be opened: & nothing hyd, that shall not be knowen.

27 What I tell you in darknesse, that speake ye in lyght: And what ye heare in the eare, that preach ye on the houses.

28 * 1.18And feare ye not them, which kyll the body, but are not able to kyll the soule. But rather feare hym, which is able to destroy both soule and body in hell.

29 Are not two litle sparowes solde for a farthyng? And one of thē shall not light on the grounde, without your father.

30 Yea, euen all the heeres of your head are numbred.

31 Feare ye not therefore, ye are of more value then many sparowes.

32 * 1.19Euery one therfore, that shall confesse [unspec D] me before men, hym wyll I confesse al∣so, before my father, which is in heauēs.

33 But whosoeuer shall denye me before men, hym wyll I also denye, before my father, which is in heauens.

34 Thinke not * 1.20that I am come to sende peace into the earth. I came not to sende peace, but a sworde.

35 For I am come to set a man at vary∣aunce * 1.21 agaynst his father, & the daugh∣ter agaynst her mother, and the daugh∣ter in lawe agaynst her mother in lawe.

36 And a mans foes [shalbe] they of his owne householde.

37 * 1.22He that loueth father or mother, more then me, is not worthy of me. And he that loueth sonne or daughter, more thē me, is not worthy of me.

38 *And he that taketh not his crosse, & foloweth me, is not worthy of me.

39 (b) 1.23 * 1.24He that findeth his life, shall lose it: and he that loseth his lyfe, for my sake, shall fynde it.

40 * 1.25He that receaueth you, receaueth me: & he that receaueth me, receaueth hym that sent me.

41 He that * 1.26receaueth a prophete, in the name of a prophete, shall receaue a pro∣phetes rewarde. And he that receaueth a ryghteous man, in the name of a rygh∣teous man, shall receaue a ryghteous mans rewarde.

42 * 1.27And whosoeuer shall geue vnto one of these litle ones, to drynke, a cuppe of colde water only, in the name of a disci∣ple, veryly I say vnto you, he shall not lose his rewarde.
