1 A * Nd ina 1.3 those dayes, Iohn the Baptiste came and preached in theb 1.4 wildernes of Iudea,

2 And said,“ 1.5 Repēt: for thec 1.6 kingdome of hea∣uen is at hand.

3 For this is he of whome it is spoken by the Prophet Esaias, saying, * The voyce of him that cryeth in the wildernes, (is,) Prepare ye the way of the Lord: make his paths straight.

4 * And this Iohn had hisd 1.7 garment of camels heere, and a gridle of a skin about his loynes: his meat was alsoe 1.8 “ 1.9 locustes & wilde honie.

5 * Then went out to him Ierusalem & all Iu∣dea,

and all the region rounde about Iordan.

6 And they were baptized of him in Iordan,f 1.10 confessing their sinnes.

7 Now when he sawe many of the Pharises and of the Sadduces come to his baptisme, he said vnto them, * O“ 1.11 generacions of vipers,* 1.12 who hathe fore warned you to flee from the* 1.13 angre to come?* 1.14 * 1.15

8 Bring for the thereforeg 1.16 frutes worthie amē∣dement* 1.17 of life,

9 And thinke not to say with your selues. *We haue Abraham to (our) father: for I say vnto you, that God is able of these stones to raise vp children vnto Abraham.

10 And now also is theh 1.18 axe put to the roote* 1.19 of the trees: * therefore euerie tre, whiche bringeth not forthe good frute, is he wen* 1.20 downe, and cast into the fyre.

11 * In dede I baptize you with water to amen∣dement of life, but he that cometh after me, is mightier then I, whose shoes I am not worthie to beare: he wil baptize you with* 1.21 the holie Gost, and withi 1.22 fyre.

12 Which hathe hisk 1.23 fanne in his hand, and wil make cleane his floore, and gather his wheat into his garner, but wil burne vp the chaffe with vnquencheable fyre.

13 ¶*Thē came Iesus frō Galile to Iordan vnto Iohn, to be baptized of him.

14 But Iohn put him backe, saying, I haue nede to be baptized of thee, and commest thou to me?

15 Then Iesus answering, said to him, Let be* 1.24 now: for thus it becometh vs tol 1.25 fulfil all* 1.26 righteousnes. So he suffred him.* 1.27

16 And Iesus when he was baptized, came straight out of the water. And lo, the heauēs were opened vnto him, and (Iohn) sawe the Spirit of God descending like am 1.28 doue, and lighting vpon him.* 1.29 * 1.30

17 And lo, a voyce (came) from heauen, saying,* 1.31 *n 1.32 This is my *beloued Sonne, in whome I* 1.33 am wel pleased.
