The XIII. Chapter.

[ A] ANd the LORDE spake vnto Moses, & saide:* 1.1 Sanctifie vnto me euery firstbor¦ne, y^t breaketh all maner of Matrices amonge the childrē of Israel, both of men & catell: for they are myne. Then saide Moses vnto y^e people: Thinke vpō this daye, in the which ye are gone out of Egipte from the house of bōdage, how y^t y^e LORDE brought you out frō thence w^t a mightie hāde. Ther∣fore shall ye eate no sowre dowe. This daye are ye gone out, euē in y^e moneth of Abib.

* 1.2Now whā y^e LORDE hath brought y^e in to y^e lande of y^e Cananites, Hethites, Amori¦tes, Heuites & Iebusites, which * 1.3 he sware vnto yⁱ fathers to geue y^e (euen a londe that floweth w^t mylke & hony) then shalt thou ke∣pe this seruyce in this moneth. Seuē dayes shalt thou eate vnleuended bred, & vpon the seuenth daye is the LORDES feast: therfore shalt thou eate vnleuended bred seuē dayes, that there be no sowre dowe, ner sowred bred sene in all thy quarters.

[ B] And thou shalt tell thy sonne at the same tyme, & saye: Because of that, which y^e LOR¦DE dyd for me, whan I departed out of Egipte. Therfore shalt it be a signe vnto y^e in thine hande, and a token of remembraun¦ce before thine eyes, that the lawe of y^e LOR¦DE maye be in thy mouth, how that y^e LOR¦DE brought the out of Egipte with a migh¦tie hande: Therfore kepe this maner yearly in his tyme.

Whan the LORDE now hath brought y^e in to y^e lande of the Cananites (as he hath sworne vnto the and thy fathers) and hath geuen it the,* 1.4 then shalt thou sunder out vn∣to the LORDE all that breaketh the Ma∣trice, and firstborne amonge thy catell, soch as is male. The firstborne of the Asse shalt thou bye out with a shepe: but yf thou redeme it not, then breake his neck. All the firstborne of men amonge thy children shalt thou redeme.

And whan thy childe axeth the to daie or [ C] tomorow: What is this? Thou shalt saye vnto him: The LORDE brought vs out of E∣gipte from the house of bondage w^t a migh¦tie hande: for whan Pharao was loth to let vs go, the LORDE slew all the firstborne in the lande of Egipte, from the firstborne of men vnto y^e firstborne of the catell: therfore offer I vnto the LORDE all that breaketh y^e Matrice, beynge a male, and y^e firstborne of my children I redeme. And this shal be a sig¦ne vnto the in thine hande, and a token to thinke vpon before thine eyes, how that the LORDE brought vs out of Egipte with a mightie hande.

Now whan Pharao had let y^e people go, [ D] God led them not the waye thorow the lōde of the Philistynes, which was y^e nexte: for he thoughte: The people might repēt, whā they se warre, and so turne in agayne in to Egipte. Therfore led he the people aboute, euen the waye thorow the wyldernes by y^e reed see. And the childrē of Israel wente har¦nessed out of the londe of Egipte. And Mo∣ses toke Iosephs bones with him, * 1.5 for he to¦ke an ooth of the children of Israel, and say∣de: God wyll surely vyset you, therfore cary awaye my bones with you from hence.

So they toke their iourney frō Suchoth, & pitched their tētes in Ethā in y^e edge of the wildernes.* 1.6 And y^e LORDE wēte before thē by daye in a piler of a cloude, to lede thē y^e right waye: and by night in a piler of fyre, that he might shewe thē light to walke both by daie and night. The piler of the cloude departed neuer from the people by daye, and the py∣ler of fyre departed not from thē by night.
