The XVI. Chapter.

IN the sixe & twentieth yeare of Asa [ A] kynge of Iuda, was Ella the son∣ne of Baesa kynge ouer Israel at Thirza two yeare. Neuertheles his seruaunt Simri, y^e principall man ouer the halfe of y^e

charettes cōspyred against him. As for Ella, he was at Thirza, dranke & was dronkē in y^e house of Arza the ruler of Thirza. And Sim¦ri came in, and slewe him in the seuen & twen¦tieth yeare of Asa kynge of Iuda, and was kynge in his steade. * 1.1 And whan he was kyn¦ge, and sat vpon his seate, he smote all the house of Baesa, & lefte not so moch as one to make water agaynst y^e wall: his bloud a∣uengers also & his frendes. * 1.2 Thus dyd Sim¦ri destroye all the house of Baesa, acordinge to the worde of the LORDE, which he spa∣ke ouer Baesa by the prophet Iehu, because of all the synnes of Baesa and of Ella his sonne, which they dyd, and made Israel for to synne, to prouoke the LORDE God of Israel vnto wrath thorow their vanities. What more there is to saye of Ella, and all that he dyd, beholde, it is wrytten in the Cro¦nicles of the kynges of Israel.

[ B] In the seuen and twentieth yeare of Asa kynge of Iuda, was Simri kynge vij. dayes at Thirza, and the people laye before Gib∣bethon of the Philistynes. But whan the people in the hoost herde saye y^t Simri had conspired and slayne the kynge, then all Is∣rael the same daye made Amri the chefe cap¦tayne kynge ouer all in the hoost. And Amri wente vp and all Israel with him from Gib¦bethon, and layed sege vnto Thirza. * 1.3 But whan Simri sawe y^t the cite shulde be won∣ne; he wente in to the palace in the kynges house, & brent it with y^e kynges house, & dyed because of his synnes which he had commit¦ted, in that he dyd euell in the sighte of the LORDE, and walked in the waye of Iero∣boam, and in his synnes which he dyd, wher∣with he made Israel to synne.

What more there is to saye of Simri, and how he conspired, beholde, it is wrytten in y^e Cronicles of the kynges of Israel. At the sa¦me tyme were y^e people deuyded in two par¦tes: the one parte helde with Thibni the son¦ne of Ginath, that they might make him kyn¦ge: [ C] the other halfe helde with Amri. But the people that helde with Amri, were mightier then the people which helde with Thibni y^e sonne of Ginath. And Thibni dyed, and Am¦ri was kynge.

In y^e one and thirtieth yeare of Asa kyn¦ge of Iuda, was Amri kynge ouer Israel twolue yeares, & raigned at Thirza sixe yea∣res. He boughte the mount of Samaria of Semer for two hundreth weight of syluer, & buylded vpon the mount, and called the cite which he buylded, after y^e name of Semer y^e owner of y^e mount of Samaria. And Amri dyd that which was euell in y^e sighte of the LORDE, and was worse then all they that were before him, and walked in all y^e wayes of Ieroboam y^e sonne of Nebat, and in his synnes, wherwith he made Israel to synne, so that they prouoked the LORDE God of Is¦rael vnto wrath in their vanities. What mo¦re there is to saye of Amri, & all that he dyd, and his power that he exercysed, beholde, it is wrytten in the Cronicles of the kynges of Israel. And Amri slepte with his fathers, & was buried in Samaria, and Achab his son¦ne was kynge in his steade.

In the eight & thirtieth yeare of Asa kyn¦ge [ D] of Iuda, was Achab the sonne of Amri kynge ouer Israel, & raigned ouer Israel at Samaria two & twentie yeare, & dyd euell in the sighte of the LORDE, more thē all they y^t were before him. And he thoughte it but a small matter to walke in the synnes of Iero¦boam the sonne of Nebat: * 1.4 and toke Iesa∣bel the doughter of Eth Baal kynge of Si¦don to wife, and wente and serued Baal, and worshiped him. And vnto Baal he set vp an altare in Baals house, which he buylded him in Samaria, and made a groue: so that Achab dyd more to prouoke the God of Is∣rael vnto wrath, then all the kynges y^t were before him in Israel.

At y^e same tyme dyd Hiel of Bethel buyl¦de Iericho: * 1.5 It cost him his first sonne Abi∣ram, y^t he layed y^e foundacion: & his yongest sonne Segub, y^t he set vp the portes: Acor∣dinge to the worde of the LORDE, which he spake by Iosua the sonne of Nun.
